Markarth, also known as Markarth Side, is a formidable city nestled among the mountains of The Reach in western Skyrim. It is infamous for its silver mines, predominantly worked by prisoners and heavily controlled by the powerful Silver-Blood family. Enclosed by natural defenses and often viewed as a treacherous passage due to its rugged terrain, this city is divided by a flowing river into Riverside—home to the native Reachmen and bustling commercial activities—and Dryside, where the noble houses reside. At the pinnacle of this unique landscape stands the Jarl's mansion, Understone Keep, which houses the Hall of the Dead and the remnants of the Dwemer city Nchuand-Zel, a haunting reminder of its ancient past now overshadowed by local intrigue and hostility towards outsiders.
