Avondale Forest

Avondale Forest is an ancient, deep, and sometimes impenetrable forest that borders the academy grounds. The trees here are gigantic, with trunks so thick that it takes ten students to get around them, and their foliage is constantly changing shades of deep emerald, amber, and silver. The branches intertwine high up, creating a living canopy that filters the sunlight into a magical, green twilight light even in the middle of the day.

The ground is covered in a thick, springy layer of moss, ferns, and luminescent forest mushrooms that illuminate the darkest shadows with a faint neon green glow. The air is cool, fresh, and strongly scented with pine needles, damp earth, and the sweet, wild perfume of night-blooming fey roses. The further into the forest you go, the more the paths begin to shift and move, as if the forest itself were a living being.

🧠 Atmosphere & The School's Natural Boundary

The atmosphere of Avondale Forest is two-sided. It is at once deeply peaceful and charged with a subtle, wild danger. It is the raw soul of the forest kingdom that meets the neutral ground of the Crossroads. For the students of the academy (especially those from The Arcanum), the forest acts as a living laboratory where they gather rare ingredients, study fey animals and practice their natural magic.

Out here, a completely different kind of street smarts is required than inside the castle's corridors. You have to be able to read the will of the forest; to know which trail belongs to a tame post owl and which belongs to a hungry predator. The forest does not tolerate arrogance - anyone who does not show respect for the trees and their inhabitants will quickly be misled by the mist and the teasing pixies.

🛡️ Magical Boundaries & Rules

Since the forest is semi-wild, the academy has set strict rules for the safety of the students:

The Boundary Bells: Along the edge of the forest, small brass bells hang from the trees. They jingle with a soft, melodious sound when a student crosses the boundary. This sound warns the forest's older fey creatures that a student is coming, which usually causes them to stay away.

The Curfew: As soon as the bell in The Old Belfry strikes for supper, students are strictly forbidden to enter the forest without a teacher. At night, the neutral magic of the academy withdraws, and the forest becomes a lawless place where the laws of the academy no longer protect you.

🎭 Adventure Corners in Avondale Forest

The Herb Picking Gone Wrong: A group of students from the Diplomatic School (The Embassy) have secretly entered the forest after sunset to pick a rare fey flower that is said to make a person irresistible during the oratory exams. They haven't returned. Players must use their tracking skills and street smarts to find them in the darkness before they accidentally disturb a sleeping fey bear.

The Hidden Glade: Players find an old, forgotten map in The Old Tales Library that shows a hidden glade deep within Avondale Forest where one of the school's founders is said to have hidden a time artifact. But the map is written in metaphors, and to find the right one, players must negotiate with an eccentric forest pixie who demands a bottle of sweet honey tea from Dinning Hall in exchange for guidance.
