Headmaster Ulrik’s office is a grand, circular room at the top of the central tower. The walls are dark, polished stone, almost completely hidden by rows upon rows of bookshelves that stretch all the way up to the vaulted ceiling. The most impressive feature of the room is the gigantic, round window of smoked glass that looks out onto the Crossbridge and the misty chasms. Through the glass, the enormous brass hands of the tower clock can be seen moving, casting slow, mechanical shadows across the floor as the sun sets. In the center of the room stands a massive, crescent-shaped desk made of dark amber wood, filled with rare fey artifacts, scrolls of glittering parchment, and dozens of small, ticking clockworks. The air is warm and carries the tranquil scent of old paper, expensive sealing wax, pipe tobacco, and a faint undertone of chronomantic ozone. Everywhere in the room, a muffled, almost soporific hum and tick of the school's synchronized clocks can be heard.
The atmosphere in here breathes absolute authority, but also a deep, down-to-earth calm. It is from here that the entire academy is controlled, and the room reflects a person of enormous emotional intelligence and diplomatic genius. It takes a special kind of street smarts to sit in this chair; the headmaster must constantly balance the demands of the citadel's chronomancers, the clans of the tundra, and the druids of the forest kingdom without ever choosing a side.
When a student (or a player) is summoned to the headmaster's office, it is rarely an easy step. But despite the room's overwhelming history, you are always met with a fair look. The headmaster sees right through lies and arrogance, but has enormous patience with young students trying to find their place in the world. Here, the kingdom's most sensitive diplomatic crises are resolved over a cup of steaming tea.
Since the office is located right behind the great clock in The old Belfry, it is magically protected:
The Sanctuary of Time (Level 4 magic): The room is protected by one of the academy's most powerful rituals. Within the walls of the office, time is absolutely stable. Time disturbances from outside cannot seep in here, and it is even rumored that the clocks in the room tick at exactly the same rate as the very first clock created when the Fragile Golden Agreement was signed.
Those Portraits: Along the few visible stone walls hang oil paintings of the academy's past headmasters.
The Frozen Hourglass: Players are summoned to Ulrik's office in the utmost secrecy. On the desk lies a unique amber hourglass where the sand has suddenly frozen right in the middle of the case - a sign of a massive, looming time disturbance near Grimvault. Ulrik, who must keep this a secret so as not to cause panic among the various regions' spies at the school, gives the players a discreet assignment to investigate the basement vault.
The Diplomatic Trap: A high-ranking envoy from the Citadel has arrived at the office to demand that a tundra student from The Vanguard be immediately suspended after a brawl. The headmaster knows that this could break the peace between the clans and the guards. The headmaster asks the players to use their street smarts to find the actual evidence in The main hall before the negotiations in the office end and an unjust decision is forced.
