The old tales Library

The Old Tales Library is a breathtaking sight. It is a gigantic, cathedral-like hall where the ceiling disappears into a dark, starlit vault filled with floating orbs of light. The walls are covered entirely with soaring bookshelves of dark cedar that stretch as far as the eye can see. The shelves are crammed with ancient, leather-bound books, parchment scrolls filled with chronomantic formulas, and heavy historical atlases whose pages gleam with gold printing.

Between the rows of shelves, narrow spiral staircases of cast iron wind, and long, floating wooden stairs move silently through the air to help students reach the very highest sections. Along the floor, which is covered with thick, sound-absorbing carpets, stand rows of heavy amber-wood study tables filled with inkwells, hourglasses, and brass reading lamps. The air is cool, still, and carries a rich scent of old paper, leather bindings, dried ink, and a faint whiff of magical amber dust.

🧠 Atmosphere & The Silent Power of Knowledge

The atmosphere in the library is marked by a deep, almost sacred silence, interrupted only by the rustling sound of pages being turned and the faint, collective whispering of thousands of ancient books. It is a place that demands absolute focus and mental acuity.

Here, students from the three faculties meet in a completely different way than in Dinning Hall or The Yard. In the library, everyone is equal before knowledge. A proud warrior from The Vanguard may sit hunched over a strategy book next to a sapphire-blue mage student feverishly studying timelines. But don’t be fooled by the silence – it takes a huge dose of street smarts to navigate here. The most valuable books don’t always want to be found, and some writings have strong wills; if you show arrogance or are careless with the pages, the book may well slam shut over your fingers or hide its text in the amber light.

⏳ The Whispering Archives & Magical Rules

The library is protected and governed by very strict magical laws:

The Whispering Pages (Level 2 magic): Many of the oldest fey books are written in living ink. Rather than being read, the books whisper their stories directly into the consciousness of the one holding them. This requires deep stillness and focus - if the room is too restless, the books fall completely silent.

The Restricted Annex: At the very back of the library, behind heavy iron bars guarded by clockwork statues, lies the Restricted Annex. This is where the heavy, unstable texts of black chronomancy and fey rituals of levels 4 and 5 are kept. To enter here, a written, sealed permission is required directly from the headmaster's office.

🎭 Adventure Hooks in The Old Tales Library

The Biting Book: A student from The Arcanum has managed to secretly borrow a book of ancient time magic from the forbidden section, but the book has proven to be aggressive. It has wrapped itself around the student's hand and refuses to let go, while also draining his magical energy (a level 3 disorder). Players must use their emotional intelligence and street smarts to figure out which specific fey riddle or soothing herb from the Greenhouse can make the book open voluntarily before the librarian discovers the violation.

The History That Changed: As players study an old history book about the Fragile Golden Pact, they discover to their horror that the text and ink begin to shift and change before their eyes. Someone has triggered a time disturbance in the school's deepest past (perhaps from down in the Grimvault), which is rewriting history in real time. Players must quickly decipher the last stable lines in the book to figure out exactly where and when the timeline has been sabotaged, before the entire academy's present is altered.
