The post chamber is a round, tall tower room where the windows lack glass and instead stand wide open to the misty gorges and mountains of the Crossroads. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling with thousands of small, numbered wooden compartments crammed with rolls of parchment, sealed letters and mysterious packages tied with coarse string.
The air in here is constantly moving and smells of damp paper, wax seals and dried fodder. There is a constant, soft background sound over the room – a mixture of the soft hooting of owls, the rapid, singing buzz of pixie wings and the rustling sound of papers being sorted. Along the rafters hang perches of braided brass where dozens of different messengers rest between their flights.
The atmosphere in the post chamber is febrile and charmingly chaotic. This room is the academy's only lifeline to the outside world. This is where students flock each time a new delivery arrives, hoping to receive a letter from the clans back home on the tundra, fresh news from the court in the citadel, or perhaps a long-awaited sack of home-knitted clothes and goodies.
Since the room is staffed by fey creatures and intelligent animals, it takes a lot of street smarts to navigate here. If you want your mail delivered quickly, you'll need to be on good terms with the messengers; a grumpy post owl might "accidentally" drop your mail in the wrong slot if you don't speak to it politely.
The Chamber uses a unique system to deliver mail across the dangerous regional borders:
The Messengers: The mail is divided based on where it's going. Large, stocky wood owls handle the heavy packages to the cold tundra clans. The lightning-fast, golden-shining letter pixies fly the important sealed letters up to the citadel, and small, intelligent swamp toads reluctantly take care of the waterproof mail that is to be sent down to Sorrow’s End.
The Amber Seal: All official academy letters are stamped with a faint magical amber seal. This light means that wild monsters and predators out in Avondale Forest usually let the messengers fly in peace, as they recognize the neutral magic of the academy.
The Stolen Love Letter: A desperate student from The Embassy (Diplomat School) asks the players for help. She has written an extremely private and politically sensitive letter to a student in a rival faculty, but someone has stolen the letter straight from the mailbox before it could be sent. However, traces and oily fingerprints do not lead out of the tower, but down to the dark corridors of Grimvault.
Sky Hunt: An urgent message to the Ambervale Guards regarding a time disturbance has been sent by a young, inexperienced letter pixie. However, the pixie has been attacked by an aggressive fey hawk right outside the window and forced to crash-land on a dangerous cliff ledge below the Crossbridge. Players must race to rescue both the messenger and the important letter before the hawk or the creatures of the mist can reach them first.
