The Yard

The Yard is a large, beautiful, terraced courtyard filled with amber-hued cobblestones. It is completely enclosed by the academy’s soaring stone walls, providing shelter from the strongest fey winds, but leaving the roof completely open to the sky. Along the edges of the courtyard are elegant arcades of dark stone, where students can walk dryly under cover when it rains.

In the center of the courtyard stands the school’s famous monumental barrel: a large, circular fountain of cast brass where the water magically flows upwards in thin, sparkling jets before disappearing into the air like a cool mist. Around the fountain, well-tended lawns spread out, bordered by ancient, gnarled fey trees whose silvery leaves rustle softly in the wind. Along the walls are sturdy dark oak benches and brass tables where students can sit and work.

🧠 Atmosphere & The Social Hub

The atmosphere at The Yard is vibrant, filled with energy and the constant buzz of students exchanging gossip, studying for difficult exams or just catching up between classes. When the sun manages to break through the fog of Crossroads and illuminate the courtyard, the place overflows with life.

It takes a high level of social and emotional intelligence to navigate here. It is at The Yard that the school's hidden hierarchies and alliances become most visible. You can learn an incredible amount just by sitting on a bench and observing: who sits together by the fountain? Which noble students hang out in the shady arcades? And which clan members from the tundra prefer to sit directly on the grass under the silver trees? It is the academy's absolute stage for teenage drama, politics and friendship.

⏳ The Yard's Protection & Timeless Rest

The courtyard is one of the safest places on campus and benefits from the area's neutral magic:

The Meridian Calm (Level 1 magic): The fountain's upward-pointing water jets are enchanted to spread a faint, calming aura throughout the courtyard. The magic dampens the worst feelings of stress among students and encourages peaceful conversation, making it much harder for arguments and disputes to flare up here than in, say, The Main Hall.

The Guardposts: From the floating bridges and towers overlooking the courtyard, The Vanguard guards keep a close eye on everything that happens. It's nearly impossible to do anything unnoticed in the middle of the courtyard during the day.

🎭 Adventure Hooks at The Yard

The Fountain's Secret: In the middle of a sunny afternoon, the fountain's water suddenly begins to behave strangely. Instead of flowing upward into the air, the beams begin to form ancient fey runes that flash amber light. It appears to be a chronomantic message in the form of a riddle, sent by someone trapped in a time rift in Grimvault. Players must use their street smarts to decipher the runes before a teacher discovers them and erases the magic.

The Hidden Document: A nervous diplomatic student from The Embassy has been blackmailed by a rival. He has hidden an important, compromising document in a cavity in one of the courtyard's silver trees. But the tree has been affected by a mild time acceleration (level 2) overnight from the nearby Greenhouse, causing the trunk to grow together and close the hole. Players must find a way to discreetly reopen the tree in the middle of the crowded courtyard without the guards or the blackmailer becoming suspicious.
