Venna Lake

Venna Lake is a large, mirror-like, crystal-clear lake that rests at the foot of the cliff where the academy is built. The lake is fed by the pure mountain streams and the waterfalls that plunge down the gorges below Crossbridge. The water is so clear that on sunny days you can see far into the depths, where smooth amber-colored rocks and luminous aquatic plants sway softly in the currents.

Tall, silvery reeds grow along the shores of the lake, and ancient willow trees from Avondale Forest lean their gnarled branches heavily over the water's edge. As dusk falls and fog rolls in over Crossroads, the lake's surface becomes so still that it perfectly reflects the academy's thousands of glowing brass windows and pointed Gothic towers, giving the illusion of a mirrored castle hidden deep in the water.

🧠 Atmosphere & The Hidden Depths

The atmosphere at Venna Lake is deeply melancholic, peaceful and charged with a quiet, ancient magic. It is a place where students seek out when they need peace, solitude or time to think. It is often where aspiring diplomats sit and practice their speeches in front of the water's surface, or tired clan members wash the sweat from their faces after a hard session in Ironhall.

But the lake also demands a great deal of street smarts and respect. The water may look calm on the surface, but its currents are strong and the depths hide creatures that do not always appreciate being disturbed. It is said that the lake has a mind of its own and that it can sense the emotions of those who gaze into the water, if you are filled with worry, the water becomes cloudy, if you have a pure mind, it shows you hidden paths.

⏳ Lake Magic & Rules

The waters of Venna Lake are heavily influenced by the academy's chronomantic presence:

The Reflection of Time: Due to the magical currents from The Old Belfry, the lake's surface sometimes acts as a window through time. On nights of a full moon, anyone who focuses their gaze can see reflections of events that happened on the lake a hundred years ago, or faint, shifting shadows of what may happen in the future.

The Ban on Evening Swimming: Students are not allowed to swim in the lake under any circumstances after sunset. This is not only because of the underwater currents, but because the lake's fey sirens and water nymphs come to life then, and they love to lure arrogant or absent-minded students into the cold depths to play tricks on them.

🎭 Adventure Hooks at Venna Lake

The Stolen Exam: A student has accidentally dropped a waterproof leather scroll containing tomorrow's important history exam from The Old Tales Library straight into the lake. He is desperate and asks the players for help to dive down and retrieve it. But the scroll has ended up in the hands of a group of teasing water nymphs who refuse to return it unless the players can solve one of their tricky fey riddles or exchange something sparkling of brass.

The Shadow in the Deep: Several students sitting on the shore have reported seeing a huge, dark mechanical shadow moving deep down on the lake's bottom, a shadow that appears to be made up of giant gears and brass plates. Could it be an ancient creature from Grimvault that has made its way out through the basement channels, and what will happen if it comes to life and begins to disrupt the lake's magical time balance?
