First Change
The @First Change refers to a special, often traumatic life event of a Garou. The initial time that an individual transforms into a werewolf and, thereby, realizes what they truly are; the First Change can happen almost any time.
Not every soul is destined to be @Garou. The seed of the wolf lies hidden at birth—woven into the blood, bound by spirit, or chosen by Gaia’s unknowable will. Some claim it’s heredity, others swear it’s a blessing (or curse) laid upon them by spirits before their first breath. Whether born of man or wolf, that truth slumbers until the moment it tears violently into the open.
For most, that moment is the First Change—a brutal awakening in which flesh twists, bones lengthen, and the war-form erupts, usually in the heart of trauma. Fear, rage, or unbearable loss pulls the hidden self into the light, and the world is remade in crimson and terror. Many wake to carnage they cannot comprehend: loved ones torn apart, enemies slaughtered without thought, the air thick with the copper stink of blood. The secret enforces itself—those who witness rarely live to speak of it.
Not every Change is soaked in violence. A rare few slip into their wolf form in dreams and wake to find the truth in the daylight. Some, guided by deep spiritual traditions, are led gently toward their nature by elders, shamans, or totemic spirits. These gentle awakenings are exceptions. Far more often, the First Change is a rupture—a jagged wound through the self, leaving shame and questions in its wake.
The Change can strike at any time, though it most often comes in late adolescence or early adulthood, crashing into already chaotic lives. For others, it arrives years later, toppling carefully built identities, careers, and relationships. Or they are surprisingly young. Especially Garou children already integrated in Garou society often change in a rather natural way, almost without great suffering, but sometimes related to a frightful event, for example after a family conflict, a nightmare or in a thunderstorm. Whatever the age, it is a point of no return. In a single heartbeat, the unknowing are bound to a war they never chose, and to a destiny written long before they understood the shape of their own soul.
