Brief History of Gnossiene

Gnossienne is a large, self-sustaining city nestled within a crescent of mountains and surrounded by a dense, ancient forest. Its outer districts are divided between sprawling farmland on one side and quiet suburban neighborhoods on the other. As one moves inward, the landscape gradually transforms into a dense urban center filled with towering buildings, temples, and cult headquarters. The city exists in a region where multiple forms of primordial and spiritual energy converge, creating a powerful nexus where the veil between planes is unusually thin. For centuries, deities, powerful entities, monsters, and other supernatural beings from across the world were drawn to this location. After a shift in the nexus’s energies, many of them became trapped within its boundaries, the nexus itself acting almost like a supernatural prison. Some of these beings dwell deep within the mountains or beneath the earth, while others inhabit the forest or even one of the nearby lakes. Over time, many of these gods and entities were forgotten by the outside world, while those capable of leaving sometimes choose to remain out of curiosity, amusement, or devotion from the cults that worship them within the city.

The origins of Gnossienne trace back to the earliest days of the world. Soon after the Earth formed, certain locations became focal points for converging primordial and spiritual forces. One such location gradually intensified into a nexus where these energies mixed and churned. The growing power of the nexus attracted gods, ancient entities, and monstrous beings. Eventually, a sudden shift in the energies trapped many of them within the area. Around this nexus, a crescent-shaped mountain range formed, encircling the region while dense forests grew across the surrounding land. Some believe these natural features themselves were shaped by the flow of supernatural energy concentrated within the nexus.

Human contact with the area came much later, when groups of settlers stumbled upon the region. Some arrived by accident after becoming lost in the wilderness, while others claimed they were drawn there through visions, dreams, or the subtle influence of the beings residing within the nexus. To many of them, the crescent mountains and lush forests appeared as divine signs or blessings from unseen gods. These settlers eventually encountered some of the trapped deities and entities, forming early cults devoted to them. Small settlements formed around these cults, each dedicated to the worship of a particular god or entity. Over time, however, something within the nexus began to corrupt certain beings, twisting some of the gods, entities, and monsters into darker forms.

As the settlements expanded, they gradually grew into small towns that began to merge with one another. Tensions between rival cults occasionally erupted into conflicts and strange incidents, while outsiders sometimes attempted raids against the strange communities during periods of religious hysteria and witch hunts. Although most of these attacks failed, the growing threat convinced the cult leaders to unite. The towns were reorganized into a single self-sustaining city that remained largely isolated from the outside world. While the city closed itself off, select members were sent beyond its borders to trade goods, gather information, and recruit new followers. In some cases, certain cults even abducted people to join their ranks or serve darker purposes such as ritual sacrifice.

As centuries passed and religious persecution in the outside world faded, Gnossienne slowly began to open its gates to outsiders. Though it remained secretive and appeared on very few maps, the city embraced modernization. Contractors were hired, new infrastructure was built, and connections were formed with other cults and organizations that could help integrate the city into modern supply networks. Some of these partners were legitimate businesses, while others were criminal organizations. Several powerful cults played major roles in shaping the modern city. Among them was the mafia-like cult devoted to Avereleth, an Archdemoness of Greed, whose followers established a grand temple and headquarters while controlling key supply chains. Other influential groups included the cults of Kirizal, the Archdemon of Ambition; Liōeidē'aluein, the Queen in Violet; and Tzara'ath, the Transcender. By this era, roughly three-fifths of the city’s population consisted of cultists, while the rest were ordinary citizens unaware of the deeper supernatural forces surrounding them. Strange and supernatural events remained a constant presence, with occasional monster sightings and a number of infamous killers emerging over the years, some of whom committed ritualistic or disturbingly artistic murders.

Everything changed when the nexus experienced a second shift in its energies. This event altered the nature of the supernatural barrier surrounding Gnossienne. Unlike before, when only many of the entities were trapped, the new shift ensnared living beings as well. Anyone who entered the city could no longer leave. The corrupted gods, monsters, and entities within the nexus gained greater freedom and power, their influence beginning to reshape the environment itself. Entire districts warped and transformed according to the will of the beings controlling them. The once-thriving city rapidly descended into chaos and horror. Monsters and abominations roamed freely through the streets, and violent cultists exploited the new reality to pursue their own twisted goals.

Within only a few years, more than two-thirds of Gnossienne’s population was wiped out by the violence and supernatural horrors unleashed after the shift. The city became a nightmarish labyrinth where reality itself could bend under the influence of ancient powers. Though outsiders can still enter the city, leaving is nearly impossible. Escape requires the aid of a rare artifact, a complex ritual, or the direct intervention of one of the few deities or entities that still possess the knowledge and ability to bypass the nexus’s prison. For those trapped within, Gnossienne has become less a city and more a living supernatural cage—one ruled by forgotten gods, corrupted monsters, and the cults that continue to serve them.
