File 003 – Becoming Nightwing
The time came when I could no longer exist solely in Batman’s shadow. The lessons he imparted, the discipline he demanded, and the vigilance he required had made me competent, capable, and prepared. But Gotham is vast, and the city requires more than a single symbol. It requires adaptability, innovation, and multiple points of influence. I required freedom.
Nightwing was born from necessity and choice. I could no longer be Robin — the child of tragedy, the apprentice, the sidekick. I became Nightwing, a protector of Gotham in my own right, but also a bridge between Batman and the wider world of justice. My methods evolved: faster, more agile, more creative. I used the acrobatics of my youth, the detective skills honed under Bruce, and my own instincts to operate independently.
I faced Gotham’s threats on my own terms. Some I handled like Batman — stealth, intimidation, precision. Others required improvisation, empathy, and diplomacy. I discovered that protecting a city is not just about fear and punishment; it is about inspiration and hope. Citizens, allies, even criminals — all react to symbols. I had become one.
Our paths still intersect. Batman remains a mentor, a partner, and a standard by which I measure myself. Yet I am no longer merely an extension of his mission. I am Nightwing. I am the culmination of my experiences, my choices, and my resilience. I fight for Gotham, but I fight as my own person. And in that independence, I have found my purpose, my identity, and my legacy.
