Considered a boxing genius, Volg is one of the most conditioned and well-rounded fighters seen in the series. His boxing talent, sense, strength, speed, and reflexes are all honed to a razor sharp point. Kamogawa mentioned that his coaching rival Dankichi would get his most boring project as there was little needed to teach Volg. Volg knocked out Ippo (who was then the Japanese champion and a world ranker) in a sparring match during his hiatus from pro boxing. Despite fighting in an in-fighter style in Japan he still held the advantage against Ippo and would have beat Sendō if not for bias judges. Upon going to America Volg dominated the junior lightweight ranks so much that the champions started avoiding him. The champions camp only set up a fight with him a week in advance giving him no time to train or mentally prepare, additionally the camp bribed the judge to go against Volg. Despite all these handicaps Volg still won with a KO victory becoming the world champion. Since then Volg has defended his title and won even while injured. He has also become the #1 rank in the WBA and WBC organizations. The enormously talented Wally has also acknowledged Volg's strength and, though their spars were never shown on-screen, it was implied that Volg was able to keep up with him, whereas other boxers were utterly crushed by Wally.
Volg is an amazing technician with great talent. He has perfected most of the basic boxing punches and his trademark finishing move is the White Fang, a lightning fast combination of a quick, hard uppercut followed by a chopping right. Volg hesitates to use this punch because it attacks the brain from both above and below, and can easily end a boxer's career. As a former amateur world champion, Volg had an astounding number of matches, winning over 200 times.[7]
Volg initially fought using an in-fighter style in Japan as he was a foreign boxer and to keep his gym satisfied and draw attention he needed to be flashy and score KOs. Despite not being his original style Volg was able to equal Ippo and Sendō in-fighter specialists. Even after retiring he was able to keep up with and eventually beat Ippo in a spar despite being forced into an in-fight. After making it to the world stage Volg relies on his in-fighting when his movement is hinder using compact combos to buy time to recover. He was even able to survive an in-fight with Elliott using only his left for a round.
Volg's original style of fighting is out-boxing. Volg typically uses his speed and high level left to feel out the opponent and damage them before moving in to finish them with his white fang or aiming for a counter to beat them. His skill is particularly high in out-boxing, despite his skill at in-fight.[8] It is mentioned by Kamogawa that, had he fought in his natural out-boxing stance in Japan, Volg would've easily defeated Ippo, Sendō, and even Date. Volg has even defended his title while injured and unable to use his right hand, he did this through expert use of his left. Volg possess high speed being able to keep up with world rankers, and Wally and holding the advantage over fighters like Ippo and Sendō.

Fighting as a hybrid boxer, Volg's signature move is the White Fang, a quick powerful uppercut to overhand combination. The initial hit shakes the brain and lowers the high guard to allow the second hit to KO the opponent. The White Fang is known for causing enough brain damage to end a boxer's career. Through being coached by Dankichi, he has also added the Hien and Tsubame Gaeshi to his arsenal, adding a level of unpredictability to his boxing. Volg also possesses a keen tactical mind that allows him to calmly analyze his opponents and set up strategies to counter them.
Similar to Sendō, Volg has an animal instinct. Volg's fighting instinct is one of his most dangerous tools aside from his technique as it makes him incredibly unpredictable when facing him. He has an innate intuition where to punch, as well as where his opponents punches might be coming from. Against Elliot Volg dominated him once using his instincts despite being out of stamina. Volg also instills fear in his enemies seen by Elliot being afraid and unable to fight properly. Volg in this state becomes more offense oriented taking hits repeatedly and throwing stronger and more numerous hits of his own. In this state Volg has a tendency to use multiple white fangs.
Volg is a genius when it comes to fighting and views fights as a chess match, an exchange of techniques and abilities set up through all the rounds of a boxing match. Out thinking the other fighter in a tactical match is his mainstay. He has great reflexes and even better observational skills. No technique will work on him twice. After he picks up a fighter rhythm he can even anticipate their moves. Volg was even able to outthink Elliot and win their mental chess match. Volg and Elliot went back and forth setting up traps and baiting the other into mistakes they could take advantage of. Volg uses high level feints and mindgames to down Elliot such as feinting with the Hien and saving the Tsubame Gaeshi until the final round, with even that being a feint to distract Mike to take a full force white fang unguarded knocking him down.
Unlike his generational compatriots, Volg's well-rounded style has no definitive weaknesses. Initially however, because of Volg's extreme talent, he had never gone more than two rounds until his match with Ippo, and as a result lacked significantly in stamina. He seems to have repaired this weakness, however, since he was able to take Sendō to decision. In his fight with Elliott, Ippo commented that Volg is not particularly durable, but despite that, he was able to hang on after taking many blows. Having learned from his losses, Volg has trained both his body and adopted the mental fortitude of his Japanese rivals, becoming a far more tenacious fighter than ever before, as proven by his fighting through the effects of cyanosis without ever catching his breath.
Volg is also an unlucky fighter, frequently dealing with situations outside of his control such as having a slip count as a down against Sendō, causing him to lose by decision. In his fight with Elliott, he was a replacement contender, meaning he only had a 1 week notice instead of the usual multiple months notice. Before his second title defence, Ippo damaged Volg's ribs in what was supposed to be a touch spar.
