Ippo Makunouchi

Punching Power

Ippo's greatest weapon is his extraordinary destructive power. His victories had a 100% KO rate, with every knockout occurring before the ninth round. Alongside Sendō, he is considered to possess some of the strongest punches in the featherweight division.

Ippo is naturally built for powerful punching. His fists are unusually large, hard, flat, and have a broad striking surface, while his short stature and exceptionally strong lower body allow him to generate tremendous force with compact punches. His jabs are powerful enough to resemble straight punches, and his body blows have been capable of making larger, more experienced boxers vomit during sparring.

His punches can break bones, leave visible marks on opponents' bodies, lift opponents from the canvas, cause significant damage even through their guards, and send opponents flying from the centre of the ring to the ropes or corners. He has even knocked out opponents several weight classes above him during sparring and defeated an opponent two weight classes above him with a single punch.

Ippo was already exceptionally strong before entering the Kamogawa Gym, astonishing everyone when he first struck the sandbag. Rather than relying solely on his natural strength, he continuously developed his power through intense training such as weight training, log hitting, wood cutting, and lower-body conditioning. During his retirement, his physical strength increased further, with his compact hooks becoming powerful enough to knock a training mitt from Sendo's hand and break the head off a bronze statue.

Speed

Although Ippo's traditional footwork is relatively poor, his dash speed is one of his greatest weapons. He constantly refined his ability to explode forward and close distance, eventually reaching a level Miyata described as world-class and superhuman.

His dash allows him to rapidly overcome the range advantage of taller opponents and force them into his preferred in-fighting range. His speed improved further through daily ankle-weight training. Even while retired and wearing weight straps, he was capable of running alongside Takamura at full speed.

Ippo also possesses remarkable hand speed. His fighting style relies on rapidly chaining together numerous compact punches, creating a relentless high-volume attack. His punches became fast enough during retirement to compete with world-level boxers, and after removing his wrist weights he could imitate the hand speed of an active world ranker. His compact hooks can be thrown with enough speed and force to launch training mitts from an opponent's hand.

Stamina

Ippo possesses an enormous reserve of stamina, built through years of consistent training. His endurance eventually became one of his greatest strengths, surpassing nearly everyone in the featherweight division.

Among his gymmates, only Takamura initially had greater stamina. During retirement, Ippo's endurance reached a level comparable to Takamura's, demonstrated by both of them maintaining maximum running speed over long distances despite Ippo wearing additional weight. Even the exceptionally fast Itagaki acknowledged that Ippo consistently surpassed him in long-distance running.

His stamina allows him to maintain a high volume of powerful punches deep into fights without losing effectiveness. His recovery is also exceptional, allowing him to recover quickly after taking significant damage. During his fight with Alfredo González, Alfredo was shocked that Ippo could still throw large numbers of high-quality punches late in the fight.

Ippo's stamina has repeatedly been decisive in his victories. It helped him defeat Volg in the Class A Tournament final and allowed him to endure extended exchanges with fighters renowned for their own exceptional cardiovascular endurance.

Durability, Balance & Fighting Spirit

Ippo's durability and fighting spirit are among his defining traits. His physical conditioning allows him to absorb tremendous punishment and continue fighting. Even before becoming a professional boxer, he could withstand powerful punches from trained opponents.

His determination can also intimidate opponents. Fighters such as Mashiba, Sawamura, and Alfredo have become increasingly unnerved by Ippo's refusal to stop advancing despite taking heavy punishment. His relentless pressure and fearless expression can make opponents feel as though they are fighting someone who simply refuses to break.

Ippo's lower-body strength has also dramatically improved his balance and stability. Opponents have compared him to an immovable rock because of how difficult he is to knock off balance. His strong legs allow him to generate powerful punches from awkward positions and pivot effectively while attacking.

His physicality, stamina, durability, and mental toughness combine to make him extremely difficult to stop once he establishes his rhythm.

Natural Talent & Experience

Ippo lacks the natural instincts of fighters such as Sendō and Takamura and was never considered a stereotypical “genius” boxer. He does not possess extraordinary natural gifts like Miyata's eyesight or Itagaki's reflexes.

Instead, Ippo developed his abilities through experience, relentless training, and nurtured talent. Kamogawa describes his greatest advantage as having developed experience comparable to natural instinct.

Ippo's body was also unknowingly conditioned from childhood through the heavy physical work he performed at his family's fishing boat. This gave him exceptional natural strength and allowed him to tolerate training that would overwhelm many professional boxers.

Technique

Compared to technically gifted fighters such as Miyata, Mashiba, and Volg, Ippo initially had weaknesses in textbook boxing technique and strategy. His strength and physical abilities were always the foundation of his style. However, throughout his career he developed considerable technical skill.

Even before joining Kamogawa Gym, Ippo demonstrated natural coordination by teaching himself to replicate the movement and speed of a jab by catching falling leaves. Under Kamogawa's guidance, he quickly learned fundamental boxing techniques and even surprised his coach with his ability to perform powerful uppercuts.

Ippo's technical growth became especially noticeable against less experienced opponents. He learned to predict and manipulate opponents' movements, allowing him to counter defensive boxers and effectively pressure southpaws. His ability to adapt strategically improved considerably throughout his career.

One of his greatest achievements was developing his own signature technique, the Dempsey Roll, which he later evolved into the New Dempsey Roll and eventually the Diagonal Dempsey Roll.

Growth During Retirement

Retirement gave Ippo a new perspective on his boxing. Instead of simply training physically, he began studying boxing more deeply and analysing the mistakes and weaknesses he had previously overlooked.

While training as a second and helping Aoki and Kimura's students, Ippo greatly improved his understanding of technique, timing, defense, and strategy. He developed the ability to catch, push, and knock down incoming punches, allowing him to deal with techniques that previously gave him trouble. He also developed a Parry Counter, which was effective even against elite fighters such as Volg.

His defensive ability continued improving through sparring. Against Mashiba, he demonstrated better control of distance and the ability to suddenly change his tempo from slow movement into explosive bursts. Against Sendo, he demonstrated improved pivoting, allowing him to transition directly between defense and offense without unnecessarily creating distance.

Southpaw Ability

Ippo had unknowingly been capable of switching between orthodox and southpaw stances for much of his career, particularly during combination punching and the Dempsey Roll. After retirement, he became more conscious of this ability and began deliberately training as a southpaw.

He initially trained in the stance to help Mashiba prepare for his world title challenge. Despite having limited dedicated southpaw training, Ippo quickly became highly effective from the stance. He was able to pressure Mashiba—a fighter two weight classes above him—back toward the ropes and force him to take the spar seriously.

Ippo's natural ability to switch stances makes his combinations harder to predict. From southpaw, he can use rapid combinations while maintaining advantageous positioning, keeping his pivot foot outside the opponent's lead foot and reducing their ability to attack effectively with their right hand.

Overall Fighting Style

Ippo's boxing is fundamentally built around closing distance, overwhelming opponents with pressure, and destroying them with compact, powerful combinations.

His typical sequence involves:

  • Using his bob-and-weave movement to evade punches.

  • Exploding forward with his superhuman dash speed.

  • Entering close range before the opponent can establish distance.

  • Using his powerful guard-breaking punches and body blows.

  • Maintaining relentless combinations and pressure.

  • Using his enormous stamina to continue attacking.

  • Absorbing punishment through exceptional durability and fighting spirit.

  • Using his balance and lower-body strength to remain stable while punching.

  • Adapting his combinations and stance as his technical knowledge develops.

Ippo's greatest strength is not any single attribute, but the way his power, speed, stamina, durability, balance, experience, and relentless mentality work together. While he lacks the effortless natural genius of some opponents, his years of training and experience have allowed him to develop into an exceptionally complete and dangerous fighter.
