Middleweight

Middleweight is a historic and highly competitive weight division in professional and amateur boxing. Sitting right in the sweet spot of the sport, it balances the rapid speed of lighter fighters with the knockout power of heavyweights.

Here is everything you need to know about the division.

Weight Limits

To compete as a middleweight, fighters must weigh within a specific range at the official weigh-in before the fight:

  • Professional: Above 154 pounds (69.9 kg) up to 160 pounds (72.6 kg).

  • Amateur (Olympic): Typically capped around 75 kg (165.3 pounds), though Olympic categories can adjust slightly depending on the specific tournament cycle and gender division.

Where It Sits

The middleweight division sits in the middle of the boxing landscape. In the professional ranks, it is sandwiched between:

  • Light Middleweight (also known as Super Welterweight): Up to 154 lbs

  • Super Middleweight: Up to 168 lbs

Legendary Middleweights

The 160-pound division is widely considered one of the "Glamour Divisions" of boxing history, having hosted some of the greatest fighters to ever step into the ring:

  • Sugar Ray Robinson: Widely regarded as the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in history, who won the middleweight title five times.

  • Marvelous Marvin Hagler: Dominated the 1980s as the undisputed champion, known for his iron chin and ferocious pace.

  • Carlos Monzón: The legendary Argentine who held the undisputed championship for seven years in the 1970s.

  • Bernard Hopkins: Famous for his technical mastery and defending his middleweight title a record 20 times.
