Tatsuya Kimura

Boxing Abilities

Kimura, like Aoki, possesses a boxing ability that is largely downplayed for much of the series (albeit not quite as badly), with Kimura himself being defined as a jack of all trades, possessing a solid, all-around style with a firm grasp on the basics, as Kimura had the balance of outboxing and infighting, as the latter specializing body blow barrage and overhands. Miyata stated that as a boxer, Kimura had no weaknesses (despite also not having any outstanding strengths) and Miyata's father said that although he was only ranked third before his fight with Mashiba, his talent surpassed that ranking.

Although renowned for having typically lukewarm boxing abilities compared to other characters in the series, Kimura has occasionally showcased bouts of talent, courage and willpower far beyond he is usually known for in his fights, specifically in his match against Mashiba; the latter himself later admitted that Kimura was his strongest challenger at the time. As a fast out-boxer, Kimura is often asked to be a sparring partner for Ippo and one time for Miyata, though Kimura benefited more from Miyata's sparring.

Weaknesses

In the lead-up to Kimura's fight against Mashiba, Miyata identifies Kimura's biggest flaw: as a well-rounded fighter he has no specific weaknesses, but he also has no strengths. Kimura comes to the same realization when he manages to slip pass Miyata's jabs, but realizes he has no plan of attack with the distance closed. Notably, his lack of a Sunday punch makes it difficult for him to intimidate his opponents. While Kimura does come up with the Dragonfish Blow, he still does not have an emphasis on particular strengths, unlike Ippo's in-fighting or Miyata's counters.

The Dragonfish Blow (ドラゴンフィッシュ・ブロー, Doragonfisshu Burō) is a combination of a short left body blow to a right above the opponent's line of sight, specifically hitting the jaw.

Usage

The opponent becomes distracted by the user's left body blow, while the user uses his right hand to hit above the opponent's line of sight, hitting his unguarded jaw.

However, since it requires charging in and focusing on the opponent body, it exposes the user to large amounts of punishment, and must be used carefully. If the opponent knows the user is going to use the technique, they can guard their body to prevent the technique from starting. The opponent can also make it so that the right overhand hits their forehead, damaging the user's fist.[1]

When used repeatedly as a barrage, it is noted to look similar to the Dempsey Roll, which when used constantly like the Dempsey Roll, drains the user's energy.[2] The user can feint the technique by throwing a right overhand first, then a left body blow, also called a "Fish Dragon".[3]

The move was invented by Kimura Tatsuya while watching his pet fish, Reiko, jump up and eat its meal in front of him.
