Report ID: CIA-RDP89G01321R000700140001-4
Date: Released under FOIA, 1987 (partial redaction)
Prepared by: Special Agent Daniel Harper, Legat Tokyo
Classification: TOP SECRET // NOFORN (declassified portions only)
Subject: 1945 B-29 Crash in Hida Mountains and Potential Artifact Recovery
Background
In August 1945, a U.S. B-29 Superfortress from Guam deviated from its flight path, carrying an unidentified artifact recovered from a depopulated village in [REDACTED]. The pilot, exhibiting signs of severe delusion and shell shock, took off unauthorized at 0200 local time. The plane crashed in the Hida mountains near Yomiyama no Sato, Gifu Prefecture. The artifact—a black obsidian idol resembling a goat—was presumed destroyed. The incident was covered up as a military embarrassment, with records struck from U.S. archives. Recent inquiries into "Kuroda Dairy" black cheese (unusual properties linked to post-crash village prosperity) suggest connections to the artifact.
Guam Station Reports on Pilot's Mental Stability
Declassified interviews from soldiers and pilots at Guam's North Field (August 1945):
Sgt. Thomas Reilly (Ground Crew, 22): "The pilot was jumpy as hell. Kept muttering about 'the mountain calling' after loading that black box. We thought it was shell shock from Iwo Jima runs. He snapped at anyone who asked about the cargo—said it 'whispered.'"
Lt. Edward Hayes (Co-Pilot on Prior Flights, 25): "He was stable until that artifact came aboard. Started having nightmares, talking in his sleep about 'feeding the goat.' I saw him staring at the box for hours like it was alive."
Cpl. Frank Rossi (Armorer, 28): "The guy was solid—flew 20 missions without cracking. No signs of delusion until after Guam refuel. Brass shut it down fast."
Pvt. William Lee (Hangar Guard, 19): "Heard him ranting alone in the hangar about 'the stone wants home.' Thought it was booze, but he was sober."
Known Disappearances of U.S. Citizens (1984–1986)
1984: Dr. Alan Kessler (USDA Food Chemist, 49) – Arrived to sample cheese; last seen near Hollier Hotspring Lodge. Vanished after a night walk. No body recovered.
1985: Richard “Rick” Callahan (Freelance Journalist, 37) – Investigating cheese supply chain. Checked into Hida-ya ryokan; left a note saying “found the source.” Never seen again.
1986: Dr. Evelyn Hart (Biochemist, 41) – Sent by private firm to analyze cheese composition. Last contact: “The black stuff isn’t ink.” Disappeared from lodge ruins.
CIA Agent Disappearance
CIA Officer James “Jim” Carver (45) – Undercover as food exporter. Arrived 1986 to trace cheese to source. Last seen near lodge ruins. Disappeared Dec 15, 1986. Body never found. Carver’s last cable: "b-29 broken arrow in Yomiyama, can't find connection to black cheese, found source of black substance trailing off to the woods near the lodge. Will investigate lead and report back."
1945 B-29 Incident (Related)
Declassified fragments indicate a B-29 from Guam crashed in Hida mountains carrying an “unidentified artifact” (rumored obsidian goat idol) and the undetonated warhead “Skinny Boy” (gun-type uranium device, contingency bomb never deployed). Pilot [REDACTED] was recovered in 1946, buried in U.S. No mention of warhead in files. Local rumors persist of a “stone box” or “bomb” never recovered. No radiation detected in soil samples (1986 USGS report). Cheese production began ~1946–47 in Yomiyama.
Callahan Narrative
Full details from debriefs: Lt. Robert “Bobby” Callahan (27), a low-level U.S. occupation officer assigned to catalog recovered artifacts from the crash site in 1946. Callahan, a disillusioned veteran and amateur archaeologist, stole the warhead (a sealed uranium cylinder) and hid it in a hollowed-out WWII monument outside the Yomiyama town hall—a stone obelisk commemorating local war dead. By inference (not fact), Callahan likely used a large truck or jeep to transport the ~3,000 lb bomb from the crash site to either the abandoned mine or the monument construction site (researched this in the local library). Callahan died in a “training accident” in 1947 before he could retrieve it. The monument was never searched; the warhead remains there to this day. From library records, construction on the monument in 1946 was the likely hiding spot. Repairs a year ago may have tipped off locals, but Callahan's notes (recovered from ryokan) describe “stone box” as a “bomb” hidden in the area.
Current Assessment
Disappearances cluster around Hollier Hotspring Lodge ruins and woods. No bodies recovered. Locals attribute to “Krampus” or “mountain spirits.” Radiation theory unsupported by data. Cheese remains untested due to supply issues. Recommend discreet recovery team for artifact and warhead. The investigation never included a Broken Arrow up until this point, but it doesn't seem to have a direct relation. A Broken Arrow in Yomiyama is concerning but so long as the locals don't know it's unlikely to blow up anytime soon; however recent city hall renovations shows the monument base had to be dug out for new infrastructure to be laid, this could mean the bomb is not there or the local municple is aware but hasn't said anything.
End of Report
Attached is a note from a DR Ayami Sone, that assessed Daniel harper condition.
Special Agent Daniel Harper, 38, is currently quarantined in Hida-ya ryokan, his condition rapidly deteriorating from the bite he sustained on December 23. Feverish and weak, he coughs up black flecks that stain his handkerchiefs, his once-sharp mind fracturing under hallucinations of maternal whispers and dark fields. He clings to his notebook, scribbling frantic notes about the cheese and the 1945 crash, but his handwriting trails off into illegible scrawls. Eyes bloodshot and sunken, he mutters in broken Japanese phrases he never learned, refusing to leave the room for fear of spreading "it." The infection spreads slow but sure, turning his skin pale and veined, tried to have me send an urgent report but like him, I can't leave this town. No body can.
Handwritten Note (scribbled at bottom): Can't send this damn thing out, to whoever reads this, If I'm gone please make sure this is delivered to US embassy.
