The Battle of Hogwarts
Introduction
The Battle of Hogwarts stands as the decisive conflict of the Second Wizarding War, fought on the night of 1–2 May 1998. It marked the final destruction of Lord Voldemort, the liberation of wizarding Britain, and the loss of many brave witches and wizards. Unlike earlier skirmishes, this battle was waged not on distant fields but within the halls of Hogwarts itself, entwining the fate of the school with that of the entire magical community.
The First Assault
Lord Voldemort, having gathered giants, werewolves, acromantulas, and Death Eaters in great number, demanded the surrender of Harry Potter. The castle’s defenders — led by Professors @Minerva McGonagall, @Filius Flitwick , @Professor Pomona Sprout , and @Horace Slughorn , alongside members of the Order of the Phoenix — refused. The resistance was bolstered by students of age, Dumbledore’s Army, the centaurs of the Forbidden Forest, and the house-elves of Hogwarts, who fought under Kreacher.
The opening bombardment shattered walls and towers. Within the chaos, Fred Weasley was killed by an explosion while duelling Death Eaters, a loss deeply mourned by all. The fighting raged throughout the grounds and into the corridors. Vincent Crabbe, a Slytherin student aligned with the Death Eaters, unleashed Fiendfyre in the Room of Requirement; though it destroyed much and nearly killed his companions, it consumed him in the flames he conjured.
The Fall of Severus Snape
Away from the main battle, Voldemort summoned Severus Snape, then Headmaster of Hogwarts, to the Shrieking Shack. Believing Snape to be the master of the Elder Wand, Voldemort ordered his death. Nagini, his serpent and Horcrux, slew Snape at his master’s command. Unknown to Voldemort, Snape had long been working against him, protecting Harry Potter at great personal cost. His death removed one of the war’s most misunderstood figures.
The Pause in Battle
Near dawn, Voldemort called a ceasefire, promising mercy if Harry Potter surrendered himself. In an act of unparalleled courage, Potter entered the Forbidden Forest and submitted to the Killing Curse. He appeared to fall, and Voldemort triumphantly displayed him as dead. Believing victory assured, the Dark Lord marched on Hogwarts with Potter’s body borne before him.
The Renewed Fight
Rage and grief gave strength to the defenders. Battle was joined once more, this time with house-elves charging into the fray and centaurs firing volleys of arrows upon the Death Eaters. Colin Creevey, who had defied evacuation orders, was found slain amidst the fighting.
In the Great Hall, combat intensified. Bellatrix Lestrange, Voldemort’s most devoted lieutenant, duelled Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, and @Luna Lovegood. When Bellatrix turned her fury upon @Ginevra Weasley , @Molly Weasley intervened and struck her down, ending the Lestrange line.
Simultaneously, Nymphadora Tonks fought alongside her husband, Remus Lupin, until both were slain — Tonks by Bellatrix, Lupin by Antonin Dolohov. Their deaths left their infant son, Edward Lupin, orphaned, echoing Harry Potter’s own fate.
The Death of Nagini
At this critical juncture, Harry Potter revealed himself to be alive. Voldemort, enraged, pressed the assault, but his final Horcrux — Nagini — was destroyed by Neville Longbottom, who drew the Sword of Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat and beheaded the serpent. With Nagini’s destruction, Voldemort’s immortality was undone.
The Final Duel
The climactic duel between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort took place before all. Voldemort cast the Killing Curse with the Elder Wand, but the wand, loyal to Potter through its prior mastery, refused his will. The curse rebounded upon its caster. Thus Tom Marvolo Riddle, known as Lord Voldemort, was killed by his own hand, bringing the war to an end.
