XX Blackmarsh - Muncæster Region

Though technically part of the Blackmarsh region, Muncæster claims rulership over most of the Wildland and would rule the remainder if it could. But this is the reason for the minor war between the Ostrobards and the Rurasin and caused the sub-region: The Hills of Watching to be a no-man's land between the two cultures. The Muncæster's region is the source of the Ostrobards' culture and the location of their capital and their ruler, the Duke Cædwine who gorges himself on banquets and the good life, unconcerned for the problems within his eastern borders and other troubles.

Geography

Streams in the region are 10 to 30 foot wide, fordable 60 to 70% of the time in dry seasons, 20 to 30% in wet seasons, in freezing weather, most streams will be covered in thick ice 70 to 80% of the time, good enough to walk across, though questionable for horses and unwise with wagons unless desperate. Some of the smaller streams are not mention; mostly because the name of the streams will not fit on map. But some useful notes to abide by is: the small stream from Loch Conn in north that flows down to Ruadh Stream is called Conn Stream. The other streams not named on the islands will be named after the hamlet or a smaller version of the hamlet; example: Stottmeister's stream will be called Stott Stream. In the text below will also give some idea of most of these nameless streams. Most major fords (shown with double arrows) on the map with most likely have some kind of man-made construction to assist the crossing. Mostly a wooden flat bridge enough for only one wagon to cross at a time. But no major stone bridges unless mentioned in the locations description.

Ætern Stream

This stream though not a powerful stream is deep in many places and as it is joined by the Sut Stream and the Feorh Stream; it becomes wider to a maximum of twenty feet on most places. There is many cascades and rock walkways for travellers on foot, but only one crossing for wagons and cart and that is at the hamlet of Sutforth.

Ādl Swamp

The swamp of diseases on the side of Rednut River, or so they say. This land is no more dangerous than any other swamp, but that is good enough. Giant frog make their home here and other swamp creatures, though the land is not large and the creature compete with each other for space.

Auchengill Peninsula

This small peninsula is barren of any human settlements, but is rumoured to hold great evil, causing most common people to avoid the area. Only the brave roam the land; rangers, huntsmen and scouts of Lhanwardine and Ethanfeld to the south. What the evil is; is mostly will-o'-wisps which roam the quieter area and an ancient wight knight, dressed in tattered mail and rickety leather and metal scaled helmet and dragging a notched and rusty two-handed sword. A once great knight cursed many long years ago to roam the land as the living dead. There is also a permanent ruin of ancient Hyperborea, but most men of the wilds avoid that ancient knoll.

Archdrokles' Fields

Named after a Kimmerian chief who founded the two Kimmerian settlements of Archippos and Xenomedes. This small fielded area which stretches from the Inlet of Vorran to the Rednut River is used by those of Stanfos and the two Kimmerian hamlets to pasture their cattle.

Bay of Cynidr

Many a ship is at anchor in the bay as Portown is easier to dock than Muncæster city due the currents which assist ships entering the bay, then sailing their merchandise by smaller crafts to the capital city via the Naitain Straits to unload any major cargo for the town.

Bay of Muncæster

A busy bay due to the extensive traffic from shipping in the area; whether fishing boats or merchant ships trading with the main capital of the Ostrobards. Four straits enter the bay and is regularly monitored by those of the Hlifian Lighthouse. Bradran Island One of the five lesser islands south of Muncæster Island. It an important location for Firebeacon; the lighthouse of Acwald the Never-happy and also a haven for many smugglers that live within the two small hamlets by the sea. Acwald knows of these smugglers, but keeps quiet, not wishing a knife in his kidney from some of the less social of the smugglers. The closest official garrison is at the Tower of Winfirth and Inverdon on the next island of Saebehrt.

Cadal Athach

The ridge of hills on Saebehrt Island, translte means the 'Sleeping Giant;' as it looks like a human lying prone on their back from a distance. Where the north hill is called Cinnéidigh or helmet and the southern hill is call Bróg or shoe.

Carlyle Stream

Not many Ostrobards travel this far to the stream called Carlyle in the south of the Auchengill Peninsula, but it proves that some hunters and scouts trek these lands looking for game or any outside invaders; due to the fact that it has been named. In its depths are a few shards of alzarém induced into the rocks and crystals hidden on small sandy beaches along the stream's banks. At present none know of its location and what hunter or scout that find them, do not regard them anymore than an unusual trinket. Still a ranger named Baldred Tyler (Rgr5, CG) is beginning to suspect, but has no care for power hungry magicians patrolling the land looking for their precious life's blood and keeps the knowledge to himself.

Cianán Field

Between the streams of Zannill and Ruadh. This grasslands much like the others is used to pasture cattle and horses. Some minor farmsteads are located here and wild animals are few, after being chased away or killed many, many ears ago, still a pack of wolves still roams down from the Dūnwunden whenever they feel like it.

Còmhan Stream

South of Gēardagas Field and which flows into River Eamont, this wide stream averages about twenty-five feet wide; its depths of four to five filled by the hills to the east. There is many places to cross but dangerous for wagons, though not impossible, but none have any reason to traverse the area except men of the wilds.

Deorcharad

Deorc-harad means dark wood in the Anglo-Saxon language of old. A very small forest of ancient origins. After 'The Mountain That Fell,' the forest was reduced to a small clump of mighty trees; some near a hundred feet tall of broad evergreens. These trees only survived by chance as the destruction rained around them. Still, some say spirits roam the lands; guarding the area, some say a witches' coven has survived there since the coming of the 'Green Death,' some say only death awaits those who venture too far into its depths and leave the safety of the road, some say great evil lives within the small forest and none who enter with be able to keep their mortal soul, some say no good will come to those who dabble in the unknown; so most just stay on the road and do not venture south of the Pencot Stream.

Denqarr Island

The northern most of the small islands to the south of Muncæster Island. This island is mostly lawful. It has a functioning breweries at Brewhurst and shipyards at Shipbough. The Military tower of Kilham functions as both a defensive instillation and a lighthouse for mariners lost at sea. The island itself is rugged and forested, mostly untouched except by the few hunters that roam its short distance. Most dangerous large wildlife was killed by the hunters many centuries before and only small game survive and those animals that can travel on land from the sea to nest or bury their eggs. There is a small presence from the smugglers from the other islands as a relay station to the main island; but not within the hamlets.

Denulosian

Called the lost valley, these high hills keep many a traveller away from the coast and the rugged path are only fit for a mountain pony and sturdy mule. Formed when 'The Mountain That Fell,' occurred.

Devnet Stream

South of Gēardagas Field and Còmhan Stream is the Devnat Stream. Though fordable in a few places by cart or wagon if one could find away through the trees. This stream of twenty feet across at its widest has many rocky waterfalls, though not high, most being just over ten feet tall cascading through the forested hills, a hidden place of beauty in the wilds. Wolves and bear that can travelled from the north patrol this area looking for food.

Duganford Stream

Duganford Stream is a broad stream and is not deep, but it has many hidden fissures and there seems to be only one safe place to cross for wagons and carts at a shallows where a man-made wooden bridge is constructed.

Dūnwunden

The hills of the winds, in the northern part of the Muncæster region. Tall hills with many gorges and crevasses created during the time of the 'The Mountain That Fell,' generates many bizarre sounds as the wind screeches through its rocks.

Éimhín Stream

A swift flowing stream, whose source is in the hills within the Wildland south of Ultán Keep some near twenty miles away. The stream flows into the estuary of the River Eamont. It is a broad stream; some near thirty foot wide, five foot at its deepest and as it descriptive states, fast flowing; generating speed in its down hill journey, which may cause difficultly in crossing if proper security measures are not arranged. Near Lhanwardine, its progress in much faster as it gushes into the Smoking Bay. Only the determined hunters trek across this river at its shallows to reach good hunting grounds in the north.

Fæstnung Holt

A small forest whose name mean Sheltered Woods. West of Muncæster Island on the mainland is where this small forest is located. Only deer and other small game animals now live in the forest as the predators have either been killed or chased away; mostly northwards or towards the Greywoods.

Feorh Stream

Rumoured to be the river of unseen spirits which pores forth from Ismere; the small lake to its south. Though a not a long stream, it is actually quite deep and at many places could submerge a horse. Though there is no need for much travel westward, except to the Greywoods and the forest village of Starfell Falls governed by the Blackmarsh Wardens. There is a shallows
