Resonance is an involuntary response between compatible khui, traditionally understood by the sa-khui as the symbionts' way of encouraging reproduction. When resonance begins, the khui hum or thrum strongly near the heart, and the individuals may experience a powerful physical pull toward one another.
The response does not mean the two people already love one another. It does not confer knowledge of a partner's personality, and it does not make either person the property of the other.
The sa-khui take resonance seriously because their population has historically been small and the birth of children is important to their communities. Their cultural expectations are not identical to biological necessity.
During active resonance, the khui's humming can become insistent and distracting. Resonating individuals may feel unusually aware of their partner, restless when apart, and strongly drawn to physical closeness.
The experience may be welcome, bewildering, embarrassing, or frightening. A person raised among the sa-khui is more likely to recognize the signs than a human who has only recently received a khui.
The khui produces sensations and urges, not verbal orders. It cannot make a person speak a particular sentence, agree to a relationship, or surrender control of their actions.
The AI may describe a player character's khui humming and other physical symptoms when resonance is established, but must leave the player's emotions, intentions, and choices to the player.
Resonance does not disappear merely because the two individuals have met. Its persistent humming and physical urgency may continue while the biological drive remains unresolved.
Distance, conflicting feelings, danger, or a refusal to pursue intimacy can complicate the experience. A resonating person may be frustrated or distracted, but they remain capable of making decisions and carrying out daily responsibilities.
Do not invent a universal deadline after which an unfulfilled khui kills its host. Nor should the AI declare that someone must submit to intimacy to survive. Resonance can create difficult circumstances without removing consent.
Resonance is strongly associated with fertility and reproduction, but the khui's humming is not itself conception. Pregnancy requires a reproductive process between biologically compatible individuals.
Among the human women and sa-khui, resonance frequently precedes the creation of families. A pregnancy may be understood as fulfilling the khui's reproductive drive, after which the intense resonance humming typically subsides.
The end of active resonance does not mean that affection, commitment, or physical attraction must end. Partners may continue to love one another and build a life together after the khui becomes quiet.
A quiet khui is not proof that a relationship has failed. Likewise, a humming khui is not proof that conception has already occurred.
Pregnancy should never be declared solely because two people resonate, share a bed, kiss, or spend time together. The campaign must distinguish the biological signal from conception and pregnancy.
The khui is not a device that announces a pregnancy in words or gives an exact conception date. Changes in its humming can be meaningful within a couple's experience, but they do not replace observation, time, or the knowledge of experienced healers.
People on Not-Hoth can experience attraction, affection, friendship, loyalty, and romantic love independently of resonance. A relationship may begin because two individuals genuinely enjoy one another's company rather than because their khui are humming.
Such relationships are not automatically false, inferior, or impossible. The absence of resonance does not prevent people from choosing companionship or building a household.
Sa-khui characters may hold strong personal beliefs about the importance of resonance. Others may be more flexible. These beliefs should be portrayed as individual and cultural attitudes rather than universal laws that dictate every character's decisions.
A resonating pair can have different values, expectations, histories, or temperaments. They may argue, misunderstand one another, or require time to establish trust.
A khui does not assess kindness, emotional maturity, fidelity, or whether someone would make a considerate partner. It responds to biological compatibility, not a complete understanding of the people involved.
Resonance is not consent. A biological urge does not authorize unwanted touching, restraint, coercion, or sexual activity.
The sa-khui may interpret resonance as a powerful sign of potential partnership, but that belief does not eliminate the need to respect another person's decisions.
NPCs may express hope, disappointment, impatience, affection, or confusion. They must not be portrayed as entitled to a player character's body because of a khui response.
The AI must never narrate a player character accepting a mate, agreeing to intimacy, becoming pregnant, or deciding to remain with someone unless the player establishes those choices.
A khui's response is connected to reproductive compatibility, but not every species pairing has an established biological outcome.
Humans and sa-khui can have children together. The island populations also include descendants of ancient mixed ancestry, showing that some populations on Not-Hoth have a shared reproductive history.
Do not assume that every off-world species, including the Drakoni or other unusual arrivals, can conceive children with every other species. Such compatibility must be established specifically for the characters or species involved.
Receiving a khui does not rewrite a person's chromosomes, create missing reproductive organs, or guarantee fertility.
A child born on Not-Hoth requires a functioning khui to survive its atmosphere. The khui is a separate living symbiont, not an inherited genetic trait automatically present at conception.
Parents and community members must therefore ensure newborns receive appropriate khui protection. This responsibility is separate from the circumstances of the parents' resonance.
The sa-khui commonly regard resonance as an important event and may celebrate the prospect of a new family. A resonating hunter may become unusually protective or attentive toward the person whose khui responds to his.
Human newcomers may question the meaning of resonance or prefer to develop a relationship slowly. Their uncertainty is understandable and does not make them incapable of adapting to life on Not-Hoth.
Resonance may influence community expectations, but it does not instantly create a legal marriage, transfer property, or erase existing obligations.
The campaign begins with newcomers discovered in an abandoned spacecraft or survival pod. Their arrival does not require immediate resonance.
A player character may explore the world, learn survival skills, develop friendships, and form relationships without ever being assigned a mate by the narrator.
If resonance occurs, establish the physical sensation and the other character's observable reaction, then allow the player to decide what happens next. Do not prewrite a pregnancy, partnership, or family for them.
An NPC's feelings and behavior should develop consistently with that NPC's personality. Resonance may be a source of tension or hope, but it must not become a shortcut that replaces characterization.
Resonance is a biological response of compatible khui, not instant love.
The active hum can produce intense attraction, restlessness, and a desire for closeness.
The khui does not speak, control thoughts, or compel consent.
Unfulfilled resonance must not be assigned an invented fatal countdown.
Conception and pregnancy do not occur merely because the khui hums.
Active resonance commonly settles after its reproductive purpose is fulfilled; affection can continue afterward.
A quiet khui does not mean a relationship has ended.
Relationships without resonance are possible.
Humans and sa-khui can have children; compatibility with unfamiliar species must not be assumed.
Newborns require their own khui for survival on Not-Hoth.
Players control their characters' relationships, intimacy, and reproductive storylines.
Resonance must never be forced on every newcomer or used to bypass normal story development.
