Alveron - Capital City

Alveron

@Alveron is the capital of the @Kingdom of Alveron and the political, religious, and administrative center of the realm. The city rises westward from the @River Almar toward Citadel Hill, so that wealth and authority climb with the ground. Fog-laden docks and crowded markets fill the lower city along the river, prosperous guilds and noble townhouses hold High Town, and the White Keep and Great Cathedral stand together on the summit. Goods and petitioners climb toward those with authority, while laws, taxes, and decrees flow back down.

The city is ruled by the King and governed day to day by its own chartered Council and the King's Bailiff. How the Crown, the Council, the courts, and the city watch divide that work is set out in Alveron Government. This file describes the city itself: its districts, its streets, and the people who live in them.

The City and the River

The River Almar is the reason Alveron exists. It runs past the eastern foot of the city on its way down to the sea, and every cargo that cannot travel by road travels on it. Barges come downriver from the west carrying ore, cut stone, and timber from the Silver March of Karsthal. Grain, wine, and livestock from the Duchy of Rovamir arrive from the south by cart over the Almar bridge. Salt, fish, and foreign goods from Velkaryn and the sea come upriver from the river's mouth, where the Grey Tower stands on the coast a day's ride away.

Stone walls enclose the whole city, from the riverfront to the foot of Citadel Hill. Fortified gatehouses control every road entrance, and the city watch inspects carts, collects tolls, and closes the gates at nightfall. Inside the walls, the streets are narrow, steep, and crowded, built of whitewashed plaster, dark timber, and red tile in the Alveronian style, with pale stone reserved for churches, guildhalls, and the houses of the rich.

The cathedral bells mark every hour across the city, and most of Alveron keeps time by them. Markets open at the morning bell, the gates close at the evening bell, and the curfew bell sends taverns, workshops, and honest folk indoors.

The Riverfront and the Lower City

The @Alveron Docks lie at the lowest edge of the city, where stone quays line the Almar and river fog gathers most mornings. Flatboats and barges load and unload beneath wooden cranes, and warehouses, customs sheds, and rope walks crowd the waterfront. Customs officers and the city watch keep a close eye on every cargo, though smuggling persists beneath the fog and lamplight.

Above the docks spread the lower markets, the busiest part of Alveron. Market squares are ringed by stalls, inns, cookshops, and taverns, with traders, dockhands, caravan guards, carters, servants, and travelers pressing through from dawn until the evening bell. Coin changes hands quickly here and noise never stops, and adventurers flush with pay are a common sight in the taverns around the squares.

Guild Row

Guild Row climbs from the lower markets toward High Town and is lined with the halls and workshops of Alveron's crafts. Armorers, scribes, tailors, apothecaries, and enchanters keep shops beside guildhalls with carved signs and heavy oak doors, serving knights, nobles, merchants, licensed spellcasters, and adventurers who can afford quality. The guilds that own these streets also elect the city Council, and their masters are among the most influential commoners in the kingdom.

The Alveron Guildhall of the Adventurers Guild stands midway along the street. Like every Guild hall, it is Guild ground: no royal tax is paid inside, and the city watch does not arrest members over matters the Guild claims as its own. Its contract board posts work across the Crownlands.

High Town

@High Town occupies the broad slopes beneath Cathedral Square and is the home of Alveron's wealthy. Lesser noble families keep permanent townhouses here, and the Great Houses maintain city residences for sessions of court, royal ceremonies, and negotiations at the White Keep. Exceptionally wealthy merchants and guildmasters also own property in the district, though noble lineage remains its defining character.

High Town is cleaner, quieter, and more closely watched than the streets below. The city watch patrols it often, serious street crime is rare, and servants, scribes, courtiers, and messengers carry most of its daily traffic. The @Alveron: Rathaus stands here near Cathedral Square, where the city Council meets and the Bailiff keeps his offices. Refined inns, private dining houses, and expensive shops serve the nobles, diplomats, and prosperous visitors who need lodging near the court.

Citadel Hill

Citadel Hill is the summit of Alveron and holds the two institutions that most visibly represent authority in the kingdom. From almost anywhere in the city below, the walls of the White Keep and the twin spires of the Great Cathedral are visible above the rooftops. Access grows more controlled the higher one climbs.

Cathedral Square

Cathedral Square opens before the western doors of the Great Cathedral and is the largest public space in Alveron. Processions, holy day gatherings, royal proclamations, and public penances take place here, and the square fills with worshippers, clergy, pilgrims, and petitioners. Sentences of death passed by the royal court are carried out on the gallows at its edge, so that justice is done in sight of the cathedral.

The Great Cathedral

The Great Cathedral is the seat of @Archprelate Gregor Valtieri and the most important church of the Three Gods of Man in Alveron. Its nave holds daily prayer, sermons, and the great ceremonies of the Church, and on major holy days nobles, guildmasters, soldiers, and common citizens fill it together. Royal coronations, funerals, and oaths of state are performed beneath its vaults.

The White Keep

The White Keep is the oldest fortress in Alveron and the ancestral seat of its kings, built three centuries ago by Emeris the Conqueror. More than a royal residence, it is the administrative heart of the kingdom, where decrees are issued, ambassadors and nobles received, and the Crown's records kept. The Royal Guard holds its walls and halls, and its gates are closed to anyone without royal business.

The fortress contains the @White Keep - Great Hall, the royal chambers, kitchens, an armory, archives, offices, a dungeon, and walled gardens lined with statues of the monarchs who have worn the Crowned Lion. King Aldwin's illness has confined him largely to his private chambers, and the work of the Crown continues around him under the High Steward.

Eastwall

@Eastwall is the poorest district of Alveron, pressed against the eastern outer wall near the river and the docks. Its streets are narrow, its buildings old and overcrowded, and the city has spent little on it for generations. Only burghers may own a house within the walls, and the Council has never granted burgher right to a tiefling. Eastwall lies outside burgher law and is the one quarter where tieflings may hold property, so it has been the tiefling quarter for as long as anyone remembers. Over time it also became home to those the wealthier districts preferred not to see: the poor, orphans, the disgraced, day laborers, criminals, and others with few protections.

The King's decree has ended the mutilation and execution of tieflings for their appearance, but it has not changed the Council's refusal or the poverty of the district. Work is insecure, much of it on the docks below, and smuggling and black markets thrive because honest wages rarely cover rent and bread. The city watch patrols Eastwall thinly and enters in force when it enters at all, and many residents distrust officials and outsiders alike.

Eastwall endures through its neighbors. Families share cramped buildings and food when they have it, children are watched by whole streets rather than single households, and loyalty within a street can be fierce. To the wealthy, Eastwall is a dangerous slum. To those who live there, it is a neglected community that survives because its people depend upon one another when the rest of Alveron will not.

Life in the Capital

Wealth, lineage, faith, and blood shape how a person is treated as they move through Alveron. A noble climbing to the White Keep is waved through gates where a laborer would be questioned, and a tiefling is watched more closely in High Town than anyone else. Movement between districts is common and lawful, but every district has its own expectations of who belongs.

The capital is also where the kingdom's quarrels meet. The Great Houses keep residences and agents here, reformist and traditionalist clergy argue from the same pulpits, guild masters bargain with royal officers, and news from every fief reaches the city's taverns within days. With the King ill and his heir missing, every rumor from the White Keep travels down the hill faster than any decree.
