Hazard is played with two six-sided dice. One player acts as the caster, meaning they are the one rolling the dice for that round. The caster chooses a main number before the first roll. The main must be 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. Other players may place bets for or against the caster before the dice are thrown.
The caster rolls both dice and adds the result. If the roll equals the chosen main, the caster wins immediately. The caster also wins immediately on an 11 if the main is 5 or 9, and on a 12 if the main is 6 or 8.
The caster loses immediately if the first roll is 2 or 3. The caster also loses immediately on an 11 if the main is 6 or 8, and on a 12 if the main is 5 or 9.
If the first roll is not an instant win or instant loss, that number becomes the chance. The chance is the number the caster must roll again in order to win the round. Once a chance is set, the main becomes the number that defeats the caster.
After the chance is set, the caster continues rolling two dice until one of two results occurs. If the caster rolls the chance again, the caster wins. If the caster rolls the main, the caster loses. Any other result has no effect, and the caster rolls again.
The round ends as soon as the caster wins or loses. Bets are then settled according to whether each player bet for or against the caster. After the round ends, the dice may pass to another player, or the same caster may continue if the table agrees.
The caster chooses 8 as the main and rolls a 6 on the first throw. Since 6 is not an instant win or instant loss, 6 becomes the chance. The caster then keeps rolling until they roll either 6 or 8. If they roll 6 first, they win. If they roll 8 first, they lose.
