The Dark One

The Dark One

Overview

Among the countless powers that move beyond the boundaries of the Mortal Plane, few are spoken of with greater dread than the Dark One. Unlike many gods and primordial beings who influence the world through subtle schemes, prophecy, temptation, or divine intermediaries, the Dark One possesses a singular and terrifying ambition: the complete conquest of the Mortal Plane through overwhelming force.

The Dark One does not seek worship for its own sake. It does not desire balance, enlightenment, or even corruption as an end. It desires dominion. Entire civilizations, kingdoms, and races are viewed as obstacles to be broken and incorporated into an eternal empire of subjugation. To the Dark One, free peoples are merely future subjects who have yet to realize their inevitable defeat.

Though immensely powerful, the Dark One remains bound by the Laws of The One. Like all divine entities, it cannot physically enter the Mortal Plane. This restriction has frustrated its ambitions since the earliest ages of creation, forcing it to pursue conquest through indirect means. Yet what it cannot accomplish personally, it attempts through armies, cults, and generals whose loyalty is purchased through power and fear.

The Infernal Legions

The Dark One commands vast armies that dwell beyond the boundaries of the Mortal Plane. These legions are composed primarily of demons and other infernal horrors bred for war. Unlike the more subtle servants of Val, whose purpose is temptation and corruption, the armies of the Dark One exist solely to conquer, destroy resistance, and establish dominion.

Entire infernal cities are dedicated to the production of weapons, armor, siege engines, and monstrous war-beasts. Generations of demons are raised knowing nothing but obedience and warfare. Some are towering brutes capable of shattering castle gates with their bare hands, while others serve as commanders, strategists, and executioners.

At the head of these armies stand the Generals of the Dark One. These powerful demons possess both martial might and terrifying intellect. Each commands countless legions and serves as a living symbol of the Dark One's authority. Across history, many of these generals have crossed into the Mortal Plane through temporary breaches between worlds, leaving devastation in their wake before being slain by heroes, adventurers, or united armies.

The Cults of the Dark One

Unable to march directly into the world, the Dark One relies heavily upon mortal followers. These cults can be found hidden throughout nearly every kingdom, operating beneath cities, within forgotten ruins, or concealed among legitimate organizations.

The cultists are united by the belief that the Dark One's victory is inevitable. Some worship out of fear, believing resistance is pointless. Others seek power, status, or promises of survival once the conquest begins. Many are simply drawn to the certainty offered by absolute authority.

Their primary purpose is the creation of Gates—massive rituals designed to tear open the boundary between realms and allow infernal forces to enter the Mortal Plane. Such rituals often require rare artifacts, immense quantities of magical energy, and large-scale sacrifice. Entire villages have disappeared to fuel a single gate-opening ceremony.

When successful, these gates become invasion points through which demonic armies may enter the world. Even a small gate can unleash horrors capable of devastating entire regions before defenders can organize a response.

The War Against the Mortal Plane

The history of the Dark One's campaigns is marked by cycles of invasion and resistance. Again and again, cults have attempted to complete their rituals. Again and again, infernal generals have crossed into the world. And again and again, heroes have risen to oppose them.

Some of the greatest legends in mortal history center upon these conflicts. Adventuring companies have descended into forgotten catacombs to prevent gate rituals. Knightly orders have laid siege to cult strongholds. Mages have sacrificed their lives to seal breaches between worlds. Entire kingdoms have temporarily set aside rivalries when faced with the threat of demonic invasion.

Despite these victories, the danger never truly disappears. Every defeated general is eventually replaced. Every shattered cult leaves behind survivors. Every sealed gate becomes a target for future attempts. The war is not one of years or centuries, but of ages.

The Dark One's Philosophy

The Dark One views conflict as the natural state of existence. In its eyes, freedom creates weakness, diversity creates division, and peace breeds complacency. It teaches that only absolute authority can bring lasting order.

This philosophy appeals to many who feel powerless or betrayed by existing institutions. The promise of certainty, strength, and purpose has drawn countless followers throughout history. Yet wherever the Dark One's influence has taken root, individuality withers. Loyalty becomes mandatory. Dissent becomes treason. Life becomes a resource to be spent in service of conquest.

The Dark One does not seek to improve the world. It seeks to own it.

The Present Threat

Though no gate large enough for a full-scale invasion currently exists, signs of growing activity trouble scholars, churches, and adventurers alike. Ancient cults thought destroyed have begun to reappear. Forbidden texts circulate through black markets. Strange symbols are discovered in abandoned ruins. Reports of demonic sightings have increased along forgotten frontiers.

Many believe the Dark One is preparing another great offensive. Others fear the preparations have already begun and simply remain unseen.

Whatever the truth may be, one fact remains certain: so long as the Mortal Plane endures, the Dark One will continue seeking a path into it. The armies wait beyond the veil. The cults gather in secret. The generals sharpen their blades.

And somewhere in the darkness beyond the world, a conqueror watches with infinite patience, waiting for the next gate to open.
