Velkaryn is the largest port city on the continent of Eldris, the capital of the March of Velkaryn, and the principal gateway between the Kingdom of Alveron and the wider world. Velkaryn stands on the coast of the Eastern Sea northeast of the capital of Alveron and is ruled by Margrave Lorenzo Bellatori of House Bellatori under the Crown. Velkaryn is wealthy, crowded, and cosmopolitan, a city of merchants, sailors, and foreigners. How Velkaryn is governed is set out in the Velkaryn Government page.
Velkaryn faces the Eastern Sea. The King's Road links Velkaryn overland with the capital of Alveron and with Eisenmark in the Silver March of Karsthal, carrying silver, grain, and travelers to the harbor. Along the coast of the March of Velkaryn, the harbor town of Porto Miravento lies to the north beneath the fortress of Rocca di Miravento, and the fishing village of Cala Murta lies to the south. Ships leave Velkaryn daily for Velstrade, the other ports of the Golden Archipelago, and every harbor willing to trade.
Velkaryn climbs in steep terraces above a deep harbor guarded by curving sea walls and a lighthouse at the harbor mouth. Frescoed palazzi with arched loggias and red-tiled roofs crowd the upper slopes, while narrow alleys and stairways tumble down toward the water, opening into busy plazas along the way. The city is built of pale stone, ochre and rose plaster, and dark timber. The sea-green copper dome of the Temple of Moneta rises above the rooftops, and Fortezza Bellatori crowns the highest hill, overlooking every ship that enters the harbor.
Velkaryn is divided into five districts. The Harbor Ward holds the docks, shipyards, and waterfront. The Merchant Terraces hold the counting houses, trade guilds, shops, and the finer inns of the upper terraces. The Temple Quarter surrounds the Temple of Moneta. The Foreign Ward houses foreign merchants, travelers, and sailors. Citadel Hill holds Fortezza Bellatori and the Margrave's household.
The Harbor Ward is the busiest district of Velkaryn and the first one most visitors see. Stone quays and timber piers handle merchant carracks, war galleys, and fishing boats, while cranes, warehouses, and chandleries line the waterfront. The Palazzo della Maregola registers every ship and cargo, the Torre dei Custodi houses the Harbor Guard, the Arsenale builds the Margrave's war galleys, and the Velkaryn Fishmarket sells the morning catch beneath the old harbor porticos. Artisan lanes behind the waterfront hold workshops such as Balestra d'Oro, Bottega Arnaldi, and The Gilded Quill. Dockside taverns such as The Salty Wench serve sailors and dockhands, and a small shrine to Kylophia stands among the warehouses for sailors who fear the sea.
The Merchant Terraces rise above the Harbor Ward, close enough to see the masts but high enough to escape the smell of the docks. Counting houses, insurers, moneylenders, and trade guilds keep their halls and palazzi here. The upper terraces hold elegant inns such as Hippogriffs Rest, where wealthy travelers, guild factors, minor nobles, and foreign envoys lodge. The Grand Guildhall of the Adventurers Guild stands above a busy road climbing inland from the docks.
The Temple Quarter of Velkaryn surrounds the Temple of Moneta, the city's great temple, crowned by a sea-green copper dome. Merchants offer silver before signing contracts, captains pray before voyages, and artisans present their finest work to the goddess. The district's streets hold shrines, lodging for pilgrims, and the houses of the clergy.
The Foreign Ward of Velkaryn is the most cosmopolitan district in the kingdom, where travelers, sailors, and merchants from Velstrade, the Golden Archipelago, and farther shores live and trade. Foreign merchant communities keep fondaci here, walled trading houses each governed by its own consul. Crooked lanes hold cheap lodging, foreign cookshops, and secondhand dealers such as La Rigatteria.
Citadel Hill is the highest point in Velkaryn and the seat of House Bellatori. Fortezza Bellatori guards the summit, and Palazzo Bellatori occupies its seaward terrace, serving as the Margrave's residence and the seat of government. Citadel Hill is kept by the Margrave's own guard, and access to the fortress is closed to those without business with House Bellatori.
Velkaryn's wealth comes from the sea. Silver mined in Karsthal and struck at the royal mint in the Silver March, known as Karsthal silver, passes through Velkaryn's harbor on its way to Velstrade, and Velstradi gold, known as council coin, flows back in return. Ships also carry wine, salted fish, olive oil, glassware, cloth, spices, timber, and foreign luxuries through the port. Shipbuilding, cargo insurance, warehousing, and moneylending employ much of the city, and the bankers of Velstrade have growing influence in Velkaryn's affairs.
Three kinds of coin pass through Velkaryn's markets. Crown silver and copper coins of the Kingdom of Alveron serve for everyday trade. The gold coin of Velstrade, known as council coin, is the coin of large bargains and foreign trade, and no merchant questions its value. Moneychangers work near the harbor and the Merchant Terraces, weighing foreign coins for travelers.
Velkaryn is the most diverse city in the Kingdom of Alveron, and folk of every race haggle side by side in its plazas. Humans form the majority, living alongside elves, dwarves, halflings, tieflings, and visitors from Velstrade who keep their own customs. Velkaryn judges strangers by their coin, their trade, and their reputation more than by their blood, and foreigners who keep the peace are left to do business.
Velkaryn lives by the harbor bells, which ring the hours across the city and mark the opening of the markets and the change of the watch. Trade begins before dawn at the docks and the Fishmarket and continues late into the evening in the taverns. Wealthy citizens dress in velvet doublets, fine linen, and hose, and favor armor covered in velvet in the Velkaryn fashion. Common food and drink include fish stew, sweet and sour sardines, fried fish, olives, bread, local wine, and distilled acquavite, while the wealthy dine on spiced wine, roast capon, and sugared sweets. Hazard is played with dice in nearly every tavern.
In their migration seasons, hippogriffs cross the Eastern Sea within sight of Velkaryn and are sometimes seen wheeling over the water at dawn. The sight is rare, and sailors believe that a ship departing beneath their shadow sails with good fortune. Pale hippogriff feathers gathered in migration seasons are kept as tokens of luck.
Moneta, goddess of fortune, ambition, and risk, is the most honored of the Three Gods of Man in Velkaryn, and her temple is the city's spiritual center. The Church of Alveron keeps its authority in Velkaryn but moves carefully, because the city's trade depends on foreign merchants. Sailors also leave offerings to Kylophia, the storm goddess of the sea, at shrines along the waterfront, and the city leaves those shrines in peace.
The Harbor Guard keeps the peace on the quays and piers seaward of Velkaryn's harbor wall from the Torre dei Custodi, while the Signori di Notte, the Lords of the Night, command the night watch in every street landward of the harbor wall, including the streets of the Harbor Ward. Smuggling, theft, and quiet bargains flourish alongside honest trade, and the city's wealthiest houses resolve many disputes privately rather than in court. In matters concerning its members, the Grand Guildhall answers to Guild law rather than the city's, and the Adventurers Guild disciplines its own.
The Grand Guildhall in Velkaryn is the headquarters of the Adventurers Guild for all of Eldris, where Grandmaster Durgan Redmantle governs every Guild branch and outpost on the continent. The contract board of the Grand Guildhall posts contracts only within the March of Velkaryn.
