Hamon Fundamentals (Universal Rules)

The Core Concept of The Ripple Hamon (also known as the Ripple) is a specialized martial art that utilizes strictly controlled breathing techniques to generate an energy functionally identical to the sun's rays. For the GM (Franz), Hamon is not magic in the traditional sense; it is the physical manifestation of vibrant life force channeled through the bloodstream.

  • Narrative Utility: By channeling this solar energy into physical mediums (like water, metal, or organic matter), Hamon Users can perform miraculous feats of agility, heal grievous wounds, and alter the physical properties of their environment.

  • The Ultimate Bane: Hamon is specifically and inherently lethal to vampires and the undead. When a Hamon User strikes an undead creature, the radiant energy actively burns away their unnatural cellular structure.

System Architecture & Combat Basics To correctly run a Hamon User in this campaign, the GM must understand how their physical conditioning alters standard 5e martial mechanics:

  • The Chassis: The "Hamon User" class dictates their core stats. They utilize a standard d8 Hit Die. Despite their supernatural feats, they are strictly classified as Non-Spellcasters.

  • Forced Ripple Breathing (Level 1): A Hamon User's journey begins with a forceful physical shock to their diaphragm that permanently alters their respiratory rhythm. Mechanically, this permanently changes how they fight.

  • Radiant Strikes: A Hamon User's basic unarmed strikes no longer deal bludgeoning damage. They fundamentally deal radiant damage, representing the continuous flow of solar energy through their fists.

The Golden Restriction: The Breath The most critical rule the GM must enforce regarding Hamon is its absolute reliance on the user's respiratory system. It is a biological engine, not an endless magical well.

  • Environmental Weakness: Because the Ripple is entirely dependent on the lungs and blood circulation, a Hamon User is highly vulnerable to environmental hazards.

  • The Hard Rule: A Hamon User absolutely cannot utilize their radiant strikes or tap into their class resources if they are actively suffocating, submerged underwater without an air supply, or if their breathing is physically restricted (such as by a chokehold or a toxic gas cloud).

  • GM Tactic: The GM should actively use the environment to challenge Hamon Users, forcing them to find creative ways to maintain their breath during combat.
