Timeline

1914 – The Great War Begins

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggers a global conflict. Europe divides into two major alliances:

  • The Entente: @United Kingdom , @French Republic , Russian Empire

  • The Central Powers: @German Empire , @Austro-Hungarian Monarchy , Ottoman Empire

In Asia, @Empire of Japan joins the Entente and seizes @German Empire possessions in China, including Qingdao. China itself remains politically weak and fragmented, with foreign powers controlling key coastal territories through concessions.

1917 – Collapse of Russia

The Russian Revolution forces Russia out of the war. The @German Empire secures its eastern front and redirects its full military strength westward.

In Asia, the @Empire of Japan continues expanding its influence, while China descends deeper into warlordism, with no strong central authority able to unify the country.

1918 – @German Empire Victory

@German Empire defeats @French Republic and forces @United Kingdom into a weakened position. The war ends with a decisive Central Powers victory.

In China, German influence returns through economic and diplomatic means. @Empire of Japan remains a powerful regional actor, but must now compete with a victorious @German Empire . Foreign concessions remain intact and grow in importance.

1919–1923 – A New World Order

@German Empire establishes dominance over Europe through economic and political control, forming a sphere known as Mitteleuropa.

In China, the country remains divided among:

  • Regional warlords

  • Weak republican factions

  • Monarchist movements attempting to restore the Qing dynasty

At the same time, the @International Mandate Authority is formalized. These are international zones governed collectively by foreign powers. They include major urban centers such as @Shanghai and Tianjin.

These cities become:

  • Financial hubs

  • Diplomatic centers

  • Safe havens for spies, criminals, and political exiles

Foreign powers prefer indirect control through these cities rather than full colonization.

1920s – The Age of Revolutions

In Europe:

  • Britain undergoes a revolution and becomes the Union of Britain

  • France collapses and becomes the @Commune of France

  • Syndicalism emerges as a powerful global ideology

In China:

  • No unified revolution succeeds

  • Instead, multiple ideologies compete:

    • Nationalism

    • Monarchism

    • Early socialist and syndicalist influences

China remains divided, while foreign powers tighten their control over coastal regions.

@Shanghai Shanghai in the 1920s

@Shanghai becomes the most important city in East Asia.

It is divided into three main zones:

  • The @International settlement

  • The @German Concessions

  • Chinese-controlled districts

The city is governed by an international council dominated by foreign powers, particularly @German Empire and @Empire of Japan .

@Shanghai becomes:

  • A global financial center

  • A hub for espionage and intelligence operations

  • A center of organized crime and corruption

Wealthy elites, foreign diplomats, revolutionaries, smugglers, and refugees all coexist in a fragile balance.

1925–1930 – Rising Tensions in Asia

@Empire of Japan becomes increasingly aggressive and seeks to dominate China and the Pacific.

@German Empire maintains influence through economic control rather than military expansion.

Inside China:

  • Northern warlords consolidate power

  • Southern factions develop revolutionary movements such as the @Kuomintang .

  • Anti-foreign sentiment grows

The @International Mandate Authority remain outside Chinese control, making them symbols of foreign domination.

Early 1930s – A Multipolar Asia

Three main forces shape Asia:

  • @Empire of Japan : expansionist and militaristic

  • @German Empire : economic hegemon with global reach in particular thanks to the @AOG .

  • China: fragmented but central to all geopolitical ambitions

The Legation Cities function as:

  • Neutral diplomatic zones

  • Economic lifelines

  • Political flashpoints

In @Shanghai , all factions are present:

  • Foreign intelligence agencies

  • Chinese warlords’ representatives

  • Syndicalist agents

  • Criminal organizations such as the @Green gang .

The city becomes one of the most unstable and important places in the world.

1936 – The World on the Brink

Globally:

  • The @German Empire remains dominant but faces internal strain

  • Syndicalist nations prepare for confrontation

  • The Entente seeks to reclaim its former power

In Asia:

  • China is on the verge of large-scale internal war as the @The Qing House struggle to consolidate its power over china's throne.

  • @Empire of Japan prepares for intervention

  • Foreign powers attempt to protect their interests

The Legation Cities, especially @Shanghai , are now strategic targets.
