Genetic Branching of the Human Species

The Post-Collapse Human Divergence refers to the long-term biological and cultural transformation of the human species on Earth following the Departure, during which multiple interstellar expeditions left the planet in response to escalating environmental instability and geopolitical fragmentation. In the absence of these outbound populations, the remaining human societies underwent a period of severe decline marked by large-scale conflict, infrastructural collapse, and progressive ecological degradation.

Early in the Post-Collapse period, human civilization experienced a rapid loss of technological capacity and global coordination. Climate shifts, compounded by industrial legacy effects and unmanaged resource depletion, rendered large portions of the planet difficult to inhabit under prior conditions. Population numbers declined significantly, and surviving groups became increasingly isolated. Over subsequent millennia, regional adaptations—both cultural and biological—emerged in response to extreme environmental pressures, including altered atmospheric composition, shifting ecosystems, and persistent exposure to pollutants and radiation.

As generational continuity replaced historical continuity, knowledge of pre-Collapse civilization was largely lost or fragmented into myth. Human populations diverged into distinct lineages shaped by local conditions, with limited or no gene flow between them. Selective pressures favored traits that enhanced survival in specific niches, while traits associated with prior technological societies diminished in relevance. This process, extended over hundreds of thousands of years, led to significant anatomical, physiological, and behavioral variation among descendant populations.

By the time of the landing of the USSF Eden, Homo sapiens no longer existed in its original form. Instead, Earth was inhabited by a range of post-human descendants whose origins could be traced to the surviving populations of the Collapse, though their connection to ancestral humanity was not immediately apparent.
