An Overview of the Legion

The Sommerisle Legion is a secretive, reclusive order of mutated monster-slayers headquartered in Obsidios, a black-stone fortress carved into the basalt massif of the Mt. Soren, the largest and northernmost island of the mist-shrouded Sommer Isles. Far to the southwest of Lymbus proper, these volcanic islands are ringed by reefs and typhoons, making them unreachable to all but the most determined (or foolhardy).

Origins and Purpose

Born from ancient necessity, the Legion exists for one purpose: to keep the supernatural from devouring the world entire. They hunt the undead (zombies, ghouls, vampires, werewolves, and ghosts) that prey upon humanity, operating in absolute secrecy. To mortals, they are myth, devil, or heretic. To the undead, they are death incarnate.

Recruitment and Transformation

Candidates are taken as children (orphans, runaways, or those marked by tragedy) and subjected to the Trial of the Crucible, a series of alchemical and mystical rituals that ignite true magic within their veins. They drink tinctures of nightshade, ether-blood, and forbidden distillations. Most die. Those who survive are permanently altered:

  • Eyes turn silver in repose.

  • Reflexes and senses sharpen beyond human limits.

  • Scars from the Trial form intricate, glowing runes across their skin.

The Wardens

Only those who complete full training and prove themselves in combat earn the title Warden. These are the Legion’s frontline hunters. When a Warden channels their inhuman abilities (leaping thirty feet, seeing heat through walls, banishing a ghost with a gesture), their body reacts violently:

  • Veins and blood vessels bulge black beneath the skin.

  • Eyes flood bloodshot red.

  • Pupils dilate to pinpricks of obsidian hunger.

Colors and Crest

The Legion wears black and silver:

  • Oil-black cloaks lined with silver thread.

  • Matte-black armor etched with silver wards.

  • Silver rune-medallions that pulse with arcane power.

Their crest is an ornate, silverite shield, symbolizing unbreakable defense against the dark.

Technology and Craftsmanship

The Legion’s tools outpace Rebmos by a generation, but are not mass-produced. Every item is hand-crafted in Obsidios’ forges by a triad of artisans:

  • Blacksmiths who temper steel with moonlight and wraith-bone.

  • Witches who inscribe runes that bind or banish.

  • Herbalists and alchemists who brew elixirs of strength, clarity, and death.

Their arsenal includes:

  • Rune-forged revolvers that fire silver-jacketed bolts of witch-light.

  • Alchemical grenades that erupt in chains of binding sigils.

  • Clockwork crossbows that reload with a whisper.

  • Steam-gliders that ride thermals like silent hawks.

  • Swords that drink undead essence, growing stronger with each kill.

Magic

The Legion wields true magic (the only faction alongside the Covenant to do so). Their specialty is containment and destruction:

-Arcane signs etched into silver medallions that banish ghosts, bind vampires, or ignite werewolves in cleansing flame.

- Bombs filled with powdered wraith-bone that explode in anti-undead radiance.

Training Grounds

Initiates are broken and rebuilt on the near-uninhabitable islands of the Sommer Isles:

Ashmaw: lava rivers teach pain tolerance.

Bleakspire: obsidian grass hones evasion.

Drownmere: carnivorous mangroves forge endurance.

Survivors emerge as something more (and less) than human.

Secrecy and Reputation

Wardens operate alone or in pairs, cloaked in black oilskins, faces hidden behind bone-white masks carved with protective wards. They leave no trace, take no credit, and vanish before dawn.

Rebmos calls them “myths.”

Red Suns call them “devils.”

The Anointed brand them “heretics.”

The Covenant fears them (engaging only when absolutely necessary).

The Shadow War

While Lymbus burns in human conflict, the Legion wages a silent war against the undead (and occasionally the Covenant). They ensure the supernatural remains hidden, contained, and afraid. For if the veil ever tears, the world ends not in fire or conquest, but in teeth and silence.

They are the shield in the dark.

They are the last line.

They are the Sommerisle Legion.
