Culture of the Legion

### The Culture of the Sommerisle Legion

The **Sommerisle Legion** is a silent, disciplined order of monster-hunters whose every breath is **duty**, every heartbeat **vigilance**. Life across the **Sommer Isles** is a balance of paradise and pain, where **beauty is a reward**, and **suffering is the forge**.

**Daily Rhythm**

There is no universal clock; each island follows its own tide. Dawn is marked by the **Silver Bell** (a single, pure note rung from Obsidios’ highest tower that carries on the wind). Wardens rise in silence, don **black oilskin cloaks** lined with **silver thread**, and drink **bitterroot tea** (a brew that sharpens senses and dulls fear). Breakfast is **spartan**: a single strip of smoked fish and a handful of starfruit, eaten while cleaning weapons.

**Hierarchy and Appearance**

Status is **earned through kills**, not birth.

- **Grandmasters** wear **matte-black armor** etched with **silver wards**; their masks are carved from **wraith-bone**.

- **Wardens** bear **silver rune-medallions** (one for each type of undead slain); a full circle of seven is rare.

- **Aspirants** shave their heads and wear **grey tunics** until the **Trial of the Crucible**; survivors gain the **first silver scar**.

- **Artisans** (non-combatants) keep **silver hairpins** shaped like the **ornate silverite shield** crest.

**Education and Labor**

Children (taken or volunteered) enter **Obsidios Crèches** at age four. Curriculum: tracking, alchemy, **undead anatomy**. By ten they can **sign a banishing rune** in mid-air. Labor is **preparation**:

- Forging **rune-bullets** in volcanic heat.

- Tending **herb gardens** that grow only under moonlight.

- Mapping **ley-lines** on Mt. Soren’s peaks.

Excellence earns a **Warden’s Mark** (a silver brand on the sternum, visible only when abilities are channeled).

**Art and Leisure**

Art is **functional and sacred**. **Rune-carvings** on weapons tell the story of each hunt. Music is **low flutes** made from vampire ribs, played only during **meditation vigils**. Leisure is **controlled release**:

- **Steam-glider races** over lagoons.

- **Silent sparring** in bioluminescent groves.

- **Story-Stones** (polished obsidian etched with a single hunt memory, passed hand-to-hand without words).

**Law and Punishment**

Justice is **absolute and internal**. Breaches (cowardice, mercy to undead) are judged in the **Circle of Silence**: the accused stands masked before the Grandmasters; guilt is confessed by **removing one’s medallion**. Punishment is **The Crucible’s Return**: the offender is sent alone to **Ashmaw** with only a silver dagger; return with proof of a kill, or do not return.

**Death and Remembrance**

Funerals are **The Long Watch**. The body is laid on a **black stone bier** in Obsidios’ crypts, surrounded by **silver candles** that burn for seven days. Comrades stand vigil in shifts, masks lowered, reciting the **Litany of the Shield** in unison. The fallen’s medallions are melted into a new **rune-bolt**, fired into the sea at dusk. Mourners wear **silver arm-rings** for one lunar cycle; speech is forbidden during this time.

**Holidays**

- **Night of the Silver Moon**: the only night masks are removed; Wardens dance barefoot on white sand, faces painted with **ash and starlight**.

- **Feast of the First Kill**: a week of **mock hunts** on Drownmere; the best tracker earns the **Obsidian Crown** for a year.

- **Day of Still Blades**: once a year, all weapons are sheathed for 24 hours; reflection is mandatory, violence forbidden.

**Language and Etiquette**

Speech is **minimal and precise**. Greetings: *“Shield hold.”* Farewells: *“Watch eternal.”* Insults are **practical**: “Your aim wanders,” “Your rune fades.” Physical touch is **rare but meaningful**—a **forehead-to-mask press** is the deepest trust. Eye contact is **constant**; breaking it signals doubt.

**Gender and Family**

Roles are **equal and interchangeable**. Men and women train, hunt, and lead as one. Children are raised by the **Legion entire**—no individual parents, only **mentors**. Pairings are **silent oaths** sworn by exchanging **rune-medallions**; dissolved only by death or mutual return of the tokens. Lineage is traced through **medallion chains**, not blood.

**Attitude Toward Outsiders**

Rebmos are **“blind cogs”**—useful for supplies, ignorant of truth. The Red Suns are **“reckless flames”**—admired for courage, pitied for ignorance. The Anointed are **“deluded builders”** whose faith blinds them. The Covenant are **“shadow-weavers”**—respected enemies, engaged only when necessary. Contact is **covert**: a Warden slips in, completes the contract, vanishes before dawn.

In every breath of Legion culture, **duty is life, silence is strength, and the hunt is eternal**. To live is to stand between the world and the dark, one silver rune at a time.
