Economy of the Covenant

### The Covenant's Economy

The **Covenant** operates an economy that is equal parts arcane, predatory, and self-sustaining, hidden beneath the violet canopy of the **Darkened Plains**. No coin changes hands within **The Vine**; value is measured in **favor**, **essence**, and **secrets**.

1. **Essence as Currency**

The lifeblood of every transaction is **distilled mortal essence**—harvested from dreams, memories, or blood—stored in thumb-sized amethyst phials. A single drop can power a hex that topples a duke or fuel a ward that cloaks an entire jungle. Witches trade these phials like gold; a novice might earn one for a month of scrying, while a Matriarch hoards hundreds.

2. **The Dream-Markets**

Each new moon, the witches open **Dream-Markets** in astral pocket-realms. Here, **warlocks**, **rogue vampires**, and **thrall-smugglers** barter:

- A Red Suns warlord’s battle plans for a love-potion that binds a Rebmosian heiress.

- A Kaldius inventor’s blueprints for a memory that erases a rival’s name from history.

- A child’s first nightmare for a single **true name** of a demon observer.

These markets are policed by **Vine Wraiths**—thorned shadow-constructs that flay the dishonest.

3. **The Thorn Tithe**

Every witch owes a **monthly Thorn Tithe** to the **High Coven**:

- One **secret** that could unseat a noble.

- One **memory** stolen from a sleeping general.

- One **drop of blood** from a vampire lord.

Failure means the offender’s own essence is siphoned into the **Vineheart**, the living core of The Vine that pulses beneath the palace.

4. **The Pollen Trade**

The purple pollen that dusts the Darkened Plains induces visions. Witches harvest it into **Pollen Dust**, then smuggle it to the mainland in hollowed orchid pods. In Kaldius, a pinch buys a night with a duchess; in Opulent Spire, it fuels a shaman’s “prophecy.” The trade is run by **Vine Runners**—mute, thorn-masked couriers who cross the Ashen Ocean in cloaked skiffs.

5. **Patron Bonds**

Though the Covenant scorns most warlocks, they **lease** minor patrons to ambitious outsiders. A Red Suns prophet might swear a year of service for a **Patron Shard**—a sliver of eldritch will that grants one devastating spell. The Covenant records every oath in the **Ledger of Chains**, ensuring the debtor’s soul defaults to The Vine upon death.

6. **The Memory Vault**

Beneath The Vine lies the **Vault of Unmaking**, a cavern of crystal shelves holding millions of stolen memories. Witches “rent” these to craft perfect illusions or blackmail. A single memory of a king’s bastard child can fund a decade of sabotage.

7. **Self-Sufficiency**

The jungle provides: carnivorous orchids yield **sleep-venom**, black-leafed trees bleed **shadow-sap** for ink, and thorn-vines are woven into **living armor**. The Covenant needs no factories; every tool is grown, hexed, or bargained from the land itself.

In short, the Covenant’s wealth is not gold but **leverage**. Every secret, dream, and drop of blood is a coin in a currency that buys empires—one whisper at a time.
