Dragon Lore

The First Dragons of @Dragoon Island

Dragons are among the most powerful and ancient creatures in the world, but unlike many legendary beasts that roam distant lands, dragons are deeply tied to a single place: Dragoon Island.

Thousands of years ago the island was a wild and dangerous land ruled almost entirely by dragons. Great winged beasts dominated the skies, while smaller drakes nested in mountains, forests, and coastal cliffs. The earliest human settlers who arrived on the island struggled to survive against these creatures, and for many centuries humans and dragons existed as enemies.

Entire early kingdoms rose and fell attempting to fight the dragons. Armies tried to slay them, hunters attempted to track them, and kings tried to drive them from the land.

But dragons were far too powerful to defeat through war alone.

The Bard Who Changed Everything

According to the oldest legends of Dragoon Island, everything changed because of a single bard.

The story tells of a wandering musician who encountered a great dragon during a time when humans were still hunted by the creatures. Instead of attacking the dragon, the bard began to sing. Through music, charm, and courage, the bard managed to calm the dragon rather than provoke it.

The dragon listened.

Rather than killing the human, the dragon spoke.

This moment became the first recorded peaceful interaction between humans and dragons. From that day forward, some humans began attempting to communicate with dragons instead of fighting them.

Slowly, mutual understanding began to grow.

The Dragon Kingdoms

Over time humans and dragons began forming alliances. Several early kingdoms formed across Dragoon Island where humans lived alongside dragons rather than fighting them.

Dragons respected strength, courage, and intelligence. Humans who proved themselves worthy could earn a dragon’s trust and eventually become riders.

These early dragon-rider kingdoms were powerful but divided. Different regions of Dragoon Island competed with one another, each claiming stronger dragons and better warriors.

For centuries the island remained fractured into rival dragon nations.

The Rise of the Pendragon Empire

During the Demon Age, around 500 DA, one kingdom finally succeeded in uniting the island.

This was the beginning of the Pendragon Empire.

The rulers of this new empire forged strong bonds with dragonkind and created a formal culture around dragon riding. Dragons became partners in war, exploration, and governance. Human knights trained their entire lives to earn the trust of a dragon.

Unlike simple mounts, dragons chose their riders. A dragon would only allow someone strong, brave, or worthy enough to ride upon its back.

Under the Pendragon Empire, Dragoon Island became the most powerful dragon-riding civilization in the world.

The Birth of the Dragonborn

As the centuries passed, something unexpected began to happen.

Humans and dragons formed bonds that went far beyond rider and mount. In rare cases, magical connections between dragons and humans resulted in offspring.

These children became known as @Dragonborn.

Dragonborn possess draconic features such as scales, horns, wings, or powerful tails. They often inherit the strength and magical affinity of dragons while maintaining humanoid bodies.

At first these births shocked many people, but over time Dragonborn became an accepted part of Dragoon Island society.

After nearly five thousand years of human and dragon coexistence, the Dragonborn race became a permanent lineage on the island.

The Rise of Dragonfolk

Another lineage eventually appeared from the mixing of Dragonborn and humans.

These individuals became known as @Dragonfolk.

Dragonfolk are closer to humans in appearance but still carry visible draconic traits such as small wings, horns, or scaled patches of skin. They often inherit some draconic resilience and magical ability but lack the full power of Dragonborn.

Today Dragonfolk are common throughout Dragoon Island and are often deeply connected to dragon-riding culture.

Dragons in Modern Times

Over thousands of years, dragons and humans on Dragoon Island developed a unique partnership.

Many dragons now live alongside human settlements and rely on humans for food, territory management, and companionship. In return, dragons serve as powerful allies in battle and transportation.

While dragons are sometimes compared to horses due to their use as mounts, the comparison is not entirely accurate. Dragons are highly intelligent creatures capable of speech, reading, and independent thought.

Some dragons even serve as advisors, scholars, or guardians of ancient knowledge.

However, dragons still respect strength above all else. A rider must earn a dragon’s trust through courage, skill, or spirit. Weak riders are often rejected.

The Dragon Legacy

Today Dragoon Island remains the center of dragon culture in the world. No other land has such a deep and ancient connection between dragons and humanoid races.

Dragonborn, Dragonfolk, and humans live alongside dragons in a complex society built upon thousands of years of shared history.

To outsiders dragons may appear to be beasts of war or flying mounts.

But to the people of Dragoon Island, dragons are something far more important.

They are partners, teachers, and the living legacy of the island itself.
