Fishfolk Lore

Origins of the Fishfolk

@Fishfolk are one of the oldest aquatic races in the world, living within the oceans, rivers, lakes, and coastal waters long before many surface civilizations were established. Their bodies resemble humanoids mixed with aquatic creatures, carrying traits from fish, sharks, octopus, whales, crustaceans, and many other sea life forms.

Most fishfolk possess scales, fins, webbed limbs, and gills that allow them to breathe underwater. Some species also have tails or partially aquatic bodies suited for powerful swimming. Because the oceans cover vast portions of the world, fishfolk civilizations have existed across many seas for thousands of years.

While many fishfolk remain hidden beneath the waves, coastal nations often interact with them through trade, alliances, or conflict.

Species and Instincts

Fishfolk species reflect the creatures they descend from. Shark fishfolk often possess strong predatory instincts and powerful physiques, making them formidable warriors. Salmon or tuna fishfolk are swift swimmers capable of long migrations through rivers and seas. Octopus fishfolk are highly intelligent and flexible, known for their mastery of tools, stealth, and multi-limbed combat.

Crab and lobster fishfolk are heavily armored with hard shells, while eel or serpent-like fishfolk are known for their flexibility and ability to move through narrow underwater tunnels.

Just like beastfolk, fishfolk instincts often mirror those of their aquatic ancestors. Some are territorial, others migratory, and many form tight communities based around reefs, underwater caves, coral cities, or coastal kingdoms.

Reproduction and Bloodlines

Fishfolk reproduction follows strict biological rules similar to beastfolk.

Fishfolk can only reproduce with members of their own species. A shark fishfolk cannot produce offspring with a crab fishfolk, and an octopus fishfolk cannot reproduce with a whale fishfolk. Each lineage preserves its own traits through generations.

However, fishfolk can also reproduce with @Human.

When this occurs, the child is usually born as a @Half Fishfolk, possessing a humanoid body with aquatic features such as fins, gills, scales, or webbed limbs. These individuals are capable of living both on land and in water depending on their inherited traits.

The Rare Birth of Mermaids

In extremely rare cases, a union between a fishfolk and a human can produce a mermaid.

Mermaids possess a fully aquatic lower body similar to a fish tail while maintaining a humanoid upper body. These beings are capable of incredible swimming speeds and are often considered sacred or mystical within many fishfolk cultures.

Mermaids are extremely rare and often become figures of legend or leadership within underwater societies. Some cultures believe they carry blessings from the ocean itself.

Fishfolk Society

Fishfolk societies vary greatly depending on their species and environment. Coral reef cities, underwater cave networks, deep ocean kingdoms, and coastal settlements all exist within fishfolk civilizations.

Many fishfolk communities operate through clan or tribe systems similar to beastfolk, often based around species groups or shared waters. Leadership may come from powerful warriors, wise elders, or mystical sea priests depending on the culture.

Fishfolk also maintain strong relationships with the creatures of the sea. Some civilizations train giant sea beasts as mounts or guardians, while others form alliances with intelligent ocean creatures.

Fishfolk in the Modern World

Fishfolk populations can be found throughout the oceans surrounding, @Oktoberland, @The Sapphire Great Lake Region, and @Dragoon Island, though most surface dwellers rarely see them except along coastal regions.

Some fishfolk kingdoms, such as the @Madrip, have strong connections with the surface world and participate in global politics and trade. Others remain isolated deep beneath the ocean where their civilizations flourish unseen.

Despite their aquatic nature, fishfolk have played important roles in history, especially in naval warfare, ocean exploration, and maintaining control over sea trade routes.

To fishfolk, the oceans are not barriers separating nations.

They are the true highways of the world, where the tides carry both life and destiny.
