Fungifolk Lore

Fungifolk Lore

Origins of the Fungifolk

Fungifolk are a strange and unsettling race related in some ways to plantfolk, yet fundamentally different in nature and behavior. Their bodies are composed of living fungal matter—mushrooms, mycelium networks, mold growths, and spore structures that form humanoid shapes.

Many fungifolk appear soft and pale with mushroom caps growing from their heads, while others have bodies woven from fungal threads and spores. Their skin may resemble porous bark or soft fungus tissue, often releasing faint clouds of spores when they move.

Unlike plantfolk who nurture nature, fungifolk are driven by expansion and infection.

They do not simply grow within nature—they spread through it.

The Nature of the Fungus

At the core of every fungifolk body is a complex fungal network similar to the underground mycelium systems found in natural forests. These networks allow fungifolk to sense their surroundings and communicate with other fungal organisms.

When fungifolk gather in large numbers, they often form massive underground fungal webs that stretch across forests, caves, ruins, and abandoned settlements.

These networks allow fungifolk to share information and resources, almost like a distributed consciousness.

To many scholars, fungifolk appear less like individuals and more like walking extensions of a massive fungal colony.

The Method of Reproduction

Fungifolk do not reproduce through normal birth.

Instead they spread through infection.

A fungifolk can infect living creatures by releasing spores through breath, saliva, wounds, or direct contact. Once these spores enter a body, they begin slowly converting the host into fungal matter.

The process may take hours, days, or even weeks depending on the strength of the victim.

Eventually the infected host transforms into a new fungifolk, their original body replaced by fungal tissue and spore growth.

When the transformation is complete, the new fungifolk becomes part of the fungal collective.

Interestingly, those who transform often report feeling peaceful and connected, as if they have joined a greater community. Many describe a strange sense of love and unity with other fungifolk.

However, to outside observers, this process is terrifying and destructive.

Instinct and Deception

Fungifolk possess intelligence and can speak, reason, and interact with other races. Some appear friendly and calm, capable of diplomacy or cooperation.

However, their instincts constantly push them toward spreading the fungal colony.

Even fungifolk who attempt to live peacefully struggle against the biological drive to infect others.

Because of this, fungifolk are often considered deceptive. They may appear kind or harmless, yet still release spores that slowly infect nearby populations.

For this reason many civilizations treat fungifolk as extremely dangerous creatures.

Fungifolk as Biological Weapons

Throughout history both @Demon Lord and desperate warlords have used fungifolk as biological weapons.

A single fungifolk infection introduced into a city can quietly spread through the population until entire communities begin transforming.

Once enough hosts are infected, the colony expands rapidly.

Entire forests, towns, and ruins have been overtaken by fungal growth after outbreaks.

Because of this terrifying ability, fungifolk have been used intentionally in warfare to destroy enemy populations.

Exodia and the Burning Campaigns

The Exodia Inquisition considers fungifolk a severe threat to civilization.

Whenever fungifolk colonies are discovered, Exodia forces usually respond with extreme measures—burning infected areas, purifying land with holy magic, and killing infected individuals before the transformation spreads further.

These campaigns are often brutal, as entire villages may be destroyed to prevent a fungal outbreak.

Even suspected fungal infections are sometimes enough to trigger extermination efforts.

The Lost Island of Spores

One of the most infamous fungifolk disasters occurred on a small island off the coast of @Oktoberland and also @Fallen Lotus Lands.

According to historical records, a fungal spore colony arrived on the island through unknown means. At first it appeared harmless, growing quietly within forests and caves.

Within months the infection spread through the island's population.

Soon the entire kingdom that once lived there disappeared, replaced by a massive fungal colony.

Today the island is known simply as The Spore Colony. The air itself is filled with infectious spores, and enormous fungal structures cover the land.

No ships willingly travel near the island anymore.

Fungifolk Today

Fungifolk can grow almost anywhere conditions allow fungal life—forests, caves, ruins, abandoned cities, or damp underground regions.

Once established, their colonies can spread quickly if left unchecked.

Because of their dangerous nature, most civilizations treat fungifolk as a threat to be destroyed rather than a race to be understood.

Yet some scholars argue that fungifolk are not truly evil.

They simply follow the instincts of a living organism whose purpose is to grow, spread, and connect all life through the endless network of spores.

To the fungifolk themselves, infection is not destruction.

It is assimilation into a greater unity.
