Fatalis

Fatalis is remembered as the Black Dragon that destroyed the ancient kingdom of Schrade approximately 1,000 years ago. According to legend, it appeared when the kingdom had reached the height of its prosperity, annihilated it in a single night, and subsequently took up residence in its castle. Murals and oral traditions from the Schrade region preserve accounts of the disaster, particularly among Wyverians. Some scholars have questioned whether Fatalis simply remained dormant in Schrade for 1,000 years. It may have slept within Castle Schrade, remained concealed in caves beneath the surrounding mountains, or existed in some unknown state beyond normal observation.

The name 'Fatalis' is now used to refer to the Black Dragon itself, although some older interpretations have suggested that the term may have carried a broader meaning, possibly referring to a decisive conflict or a wider calamity in which life itself is placed at risk. In this sense, Fatalis may originally have referred not only to the monster, but also to the calamity surrounding its appearance.[2] For much of history, Fatalis was regarded as a creature of folklore rather than a confirmed living being. Even within the Hunter's Guild, only a limited number of individuals believed that it truly existed. Its legend survived through nursery rhymes and oral traditions, including the phrase: 'When the world is full of wyverns, the legend is revived.' This line has been interpreted in different ways across various periods, with some later speculation associating Fatalis' reappearance with the existence of Safi'jiiva, the Red Dragon.

Fatalis' original appearance in Monster Hunter is associated with the deaths of a large number of powerful monsters, including species such as Rathalos and Rathian, as a condition for its emergence. This requirement is alluded to by NPCs through folklore-like dialogue, sometimes framed in terms resembling prophecy. This has led to interpretations that Fatalis' appearance may be linked to major disturbances in the natural balance, particularly those caused by the extensive hunting of large monsters. A more extreme hypothesis proposes that Fatalis may not be bound by ordinary space and time, instead emerging through distortions in the world itself. Such theories remain speculative, but they reflect the difficulty of explaining Fatalis through conventional biological standards.

Physiology

Fatalis closely resembles a traditional European dragon, with a long, serpentine neck and tail, a pair of large bat-like wings, and a body covered in fine, jet-black scales.

Based on the four-toed structure of its hind limbs, some have suggested that Fatalis may have a distant connection to wyverns, although this remains highly conjectural. Its head bears four large, distorted horns that curve backwards, along with fin-like ears and rows of enlarged teeth. The horns appear to have a functional role rather than being purely ornamental, as observations indicate that damaging them can reduce the intensity of Fatalis' flame breath. Its back is lined with pale spines, while the membranes of its wings are wrinkled and cracked along the edges.

Although classified as an Elder Dragon, Fatalis is biologically unusual within that category. No traces of typical 'Elder Dragon Blood' containing Dragon Element energy have been detected in its body, which makes direct comparison with some other Elder Dragons difficult. The metal fused to Fatalis' chest is believed to originate from weapons accumulated in its roost, which melted under its extreme body heat and adhered to its skin. This suggests that Fatalis maintains an abnormally high internal temperature even when it is not actively attacking.

Abilities

Fatalis is regarded as one of the most powerful Elder Dragons, and is known for having destroyed an entire kingdom by itself. Its destructive capability is primarily associated with its fire breath. Its most notable attack is a high-intensity breath known as 'Erasing Fire'. This is produced when Fatalis draws a large quantity of air into its superheated body, ignites explosive flame within its chest, and releases it as a continuous blast. Accounts describing Fatalis as 'burning everything down' were once treated as possible exaggerations, but later investigations indicated that such descriptions were at least partly accurate: its flames are capable of reducing stone rubble to ash and melting through thick defensive fortifications.

Fatalis' flames are not limited to conventional breath attacks. It can produce streams of fire, explosive blasts, and wide-area infernos capable of engulfing large sections of a battlefield. When it recognises an opponent as a significant threat, Fatalis may use Erasing Fire to incinerate the surrounding area, making survival possible only behind sufficiently durable cover. In its final stage, Fatalis releases power that had previously been suppressed, causing its body to accumulate extreme heat. Its breath then becomes a pale, exceptionally high-temperature flame with increased destructive force. Although its build is relatively slender, Fatalis possesses considerable physical strength. It uses its tail, jaws, limbs, wings, and body to strike, crush, or batter opponents, and even ordinary movements can break through stone structures. Fatalis alternates between moving on all fours and standing upright. In an upright posture, its heated chest is more exposed, while its position allows it to direct flames downwards towards enemies near its feet.

Fatalis is also associated with unusual natural phenomena. Traditions describe earthquakes, burning forests, the disappearance of birds and wyverns, and the darkening of the sky as signs of its arrival. Whether these events are directly caused by Fatalis or merely accompany its appearance remains unclear, but they form part of the long-standing accounts surrounding the creature.

Behavior

Very little is known about Fatalis' natural behaviour. It has not been reliably documented preying upon other monsters, nor are there confirmed accounts of it altering ecosystems in the manner associated with some Elder Dragons. However, some accounts suggest that its presence may have caused a Lao-Shan Lung to avoid the area.[2]

Fatalis displays extreme hostility towards living beings that confront it, and is known to burn anything in its path once provoked. In combat, it initially appears to conserve its strength, relying on close-range physical attacks and flame breath while alternating between upright and quadrupedal movement. When it judges an opponent to be a significant threat, it begins to use Erasing Fire and gradually releases more of its full power.

The reason Fatalis attacked the kingdom of Schrade remains unknown. Some interpretations therefore treat Fatalis less as an animal acting from ordinary instinct, and more as a calamity beyond human understanding.[2

Habitat

Fatalis is most closely associated with the ruins of Castle Schrade, where the Black Dragon is said to have taken the castle as its roost after destroying the kingdom. This remains the principal location associated with Fatalis, although whether it remained there continuously for the following millennium is unknown.

No stable natural habitat for Fatalis has been confirmed. Its connection to Schrade may be historical, instinctive, territorial, or related to circumstances that remain unclear. Owing to the uncertainty surrounding its disappearance and reappearance, some researchers have suggested that Fatalis may not inhabit a conventional environment in the usual sense, but may instead emerge under exceptional conditions associated with large-scale calamities.

Fatalis has also been encountered in other exceptional locations in spin-off records, including Dovan Volcano in Monster Hunter Stories and the Elder's Lair on Hakolo Island in Monster Hunter Stories 2.
