Leviathans (Japanese: 海竜種 Kairyūshu) are a class of monsters first appearing in the Third Generation. This class consists of large wyverns that are generally characterized by lithe, serpentine bodies and speed that outclasses many other monsters. While the majority of Leviathans are found in aquatic and other wet environments like swamps or marshes, some have adapted to life on land by "swimming" through sand, snow, or lava. Leviathans are known to usually be the top predators of their environments like Flying Wyverns.

Type: Snake Wyvern / 蛇竜種

MH4-Najarala Render 001

Snake Wyverns:Remobra, Najarala, Tidal Najarala

Snake Wyverns (Japanese: 蛇竜種 Jaryūshu) are a class of monster first introduced in Monster Hunter 4. These monsters are known for their serpentine features, such as long, coiling bodies and forked tongues. They can range dramatically in both size and overall body structure, with some members being large, serpentine land-dwellers, while others are smaller and more reminiscent of Flying Wyverns.

Type: Brute Wyvern / 獣竜種

MHW-Deviljho Render 001

Brute Wyverns:Barroth, Jade Barroth, Thanksalot Barroth, Barroth EX, Deviljho, Savage Deviljho, Four Heavenly King Deviljho, Starving Deviljho, Aberrant Deviljho, Uragaan, Steel Uragaan, Crystalbeard Uragaan, B.O.W. Uragaan, Pumpkin Uragaan, Rotten Uragaan, Shiningrock Uragaan, Watermelon Uragaan, Uragaan EX, Duramboros, Rust Duramboros, Explosive Peak Duramboros, Brachydios, Raging Brachydios, Unit-01 Brachydios, Iceblast Brachydios, Glavenus, Acidic Glavenus, Hellblade Glavenus, Anjanath, Fulgur Anjanath, Radobaan, Banbaro, Quematrice, Rompopolo, Abiorugu, Giaorugu, Zenith Giaorugu, Gasurabazura, Zenith Gasurabazura, Disaster Wyvern

Brute Wyverns (Japanese: 獣竜種 Jūryūshu) are a flightless group of wyverns first introduced in the Third Generation. Greatly resembling nonfictional theropods, these monsters are well adapted for life on land, using their powerful hindlimbs to get around from place to place rather than using wings or other means to travel.[4] A common trait that most Brute Wyverns share is the small forelimbs that they can barely use, but there are some exceptions that have heavily developed those limbs to use in combat.[5]

Type: Fanged Wyvern / 牙竜種

MHRise-Zinogre Render 001

Fanged Wyverns:Zinogre, Stygian Zinogre, Thunderlord Zinogre, Apex Zinogre, Howling Zinogre, FFBE Zinogre, Immortal Zinogre, Dodogama, Girros, Great Girros, Jagras, Great Jagras, Odogaron, Ebony Odogaron, Shamos, Tobi-Kadachi, Viper Tobi-Kadachi, Wulg, Magnamalo, Scorned Magnamalo, Lunagaron

Fanged Wyverns (Japanese: 牙竜種 Garyūshu) are a class of monster first introduced in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. They are known for being Fanged Beast-like Wyvern monsters that have highly developed limbs. Up until the Fifth Generation, the only known species of these wyverns were Zinogre and its variations. The Fifth Generation introduced many notable Fanged Wyverns, such as Tobi-Kadachi, Odogaron, Magnamalo, and Lunagaron.

With the new additions to this classification, the common traits of the Fanged Wyverns have been narrowed to being quadrupedal and having wingless forelimbs larger than their hindlimbs, while other body structures may vary; some like Odogaron and Tobi-Kadachi anchor their weight completely on their limbs pointing downward, while Great Jagras or Dodogama occasionally drag their bodies with limbs spreading to the sides, not unlike Leviathans. A common trait shared among many Fanged Wyverns is their agility and speed; however, several Fanged Wyverns, like the aforementioned Great Jagras and Dodogama, are much less nimble.

Elder Dragons (Japanese: 古龍種 Koryūshu) are a class of monsters introduced in the first generation. Unlike other monster types, which classify monsters by shared traits, Elder Dragons are creatures that defy typical classification and reside outside of the standard ecosystem, regardless of their resemblance to a dragon. These monsters are rare creatures with immense power that have lived since ancient times.

Type: Demi Elder / 亜龍種

MHRS-Gore Magala Render 001

Demi Elders:Gore Magala, Chaotic Gore Magala, Tenth Angel Gore Magala

Demi Elders (Japanese: 亜龍種 Aryūshu) are class of monsters introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. This refers to monsters that are similar to but distinct from Elder Dragons in that they can be captured, but are nevertheless considered Elder Dragon-Level Monsters threats to the ecosystem.

Type: Relict / 遺存種

MHW-Leshen Render 001

Relicts:Leshen, Ancient Leshen

Relicts (Japanese: 遺存種 Isonshu) are a class of monster first introduced in Monster Hunter: World. This class covers certain creatures found in The Witcher series. This class includes only two known types of monster, the Leshen and Ancient Leshen.

Type: Cephalopods / 頭足種

MHWilds-Nu Udra Render 001

Cephalopods:Nu Udra, Xu Wu

Cephalopods (Japanese: 頭足種 Tōsokushu) are a class of monsters introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. This class of monster is mostly found at the top of their respective ecosystem's food chain, and are characterized by the presence of 8 prehensile appendages much like an octopus that allows them to gracefully move and climb through any terrain, and attack from any angle. However, all Cephalopod species known so far only have 6 usable tentacles, with the pair closest to their eyes being heavily atrophied. Their boneless bodies allow them to squeeze through impossibly tight spaces (despite this, pitfall trap works against them), and while some do posses eyes, their vision is poor and they mostly rely on other sensory organs to locate their prey.

Type: Constructs / 造竜種

MHWilds-Zoh Shia Render 001

Constructs:Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Arkveld, Guardian Ebony Odogaron, Guardian Fulgur Anjanath, Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Seikret, Zoh Shia

Constructs (Japanese: 造竜種 Zōryūshu) are a class of monsters introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds, identified by their purple, glowing veins, white fur/feathers, black eyes, blue blood, and Wylk crystal-enhanced attacks. They are artificial monsters that were created by the Ancient Civilization of Wyveria, presumably to act as beasts of burden or as living weapons. When the civilization fell, they were put into hibernation within white cocoons, but have recently begun to reawaken and have turned feral, attacking each other, other monsters, and people.

Type: Unknown / ???

MHO-Estrellian Render 001

???:Estrellian, Doom Estrellian, Arbiter Estrellian, Epona, Great Poogie, Kurenai Goukami, Gear REX

??? (Japanese: ???) or Unknown are a class of monster first introduced in Monster Hunter 4. These monsters belong to an as-of-yet unknown class within the context of the game. The difference between this class and the Unclassified Monster class is that these monsters have been officially identified in-game as unknown, whereas the typing of Unclassified Monsters is not referred to at all within the game.
