Government

(Monarchy System of Government) Dail is ruled by a Queen and is colonial in nature with many Governors submitting to the Queen’s rule for the unity and common goals a singular leader can provide. The High Court oversees all matters of state and each province is overseen by a localized Governor who answers directly to the crown. There are also a number of powerful merchant guilds that participate in court governance and wealth heavily influences decision making in the Dailish government. Due to the maritime focus on trade the taxes are far reaching and the Queen’s impact on trade worldwide is felt.

Architecture

Dailish architecture is best described as Renaissance era Spain. The style is characterized by ornate decorative facades covered with floral designs, chandeliers, festoons, fantastic creatures and all sorts of configurations. The spatial arrangement of structures is Gothic-inspired or villa complex layouts, and ornate. Towns and villages have heavy use of plasters and terracotta materials to achieve the signature look of Dail.

Clothing

Dailish clothing can best be described as colorful and intricate even at its most basic. Dailish people prefer cotton and leather materials over all the others and enjoy adding frills and flare to their shirts and dresses. Color of any kind is considered a status symbol because of the dyes used to make them, so colorful dyed clothing with patterns on it are everywhere in Dail.

Food

Typical cuisine includes heavy use of corn, wheat, rice, beans, seafood, peppers, and oils. There is also a cultural fascination with spicy food. Drinks are usually fruit or tea leaf based and alcohol favors sweet tasting wines.

Culture

Music: Dailish music favors flute and lute combinations and can be quite lively in nature. Dancing is a big part of the culture and the music in Dail is sophisticated and can convey moods through the compositions.

Literature: Because of the seafaring mercantile nature of Dail, literature is robust and just about everything is documented through contracts. Because of the colonial nature and far-reaching influence of their ships Dail is also home to many authors who pen books for entertainment, with an almost fairy tale ascetic to them.

Entertainment/Theater: Gambling is by far the most popular form of entertainment in Dail. Particularly games of dice and cards. Prostitution is also allowed and high-priced courtesans are considered the highest luxury entertainment. Dailish theater lends itself more towards opera and dancing performances. Dancing performances are considered the peak of the arts, and elaborate dances performed by a group of people are common on stage.

Technology and Magic

Dail does not shy away from scientific pursuits or technology. They are keen on anything that advances sailing and will accept any such technology that gives them an advantage at sea. Magic is also readily used in Dail and most citizens are not surprised by its appearance so long as no laws are being broken with it.

History

Already an industrious sea people, even before the great war between dwarves and elves, the Dailish were mastering the seas very early on. Their civilization began as fisherman and traders that would ferry goods across the seas between the earlier elf and dwarven kingdoms. Learning much from them about survival and prosperity at sea. After the great war as more territory became available their culture expanded greatly, taking over a good portion of the shorelines across the continent. Modeling their government a lot like their dwarven neighbors they created a monarchy system that heavily favored colonial expansion and mercantile prowess, to grow their trade empire. However when the war between the elves and the dwarves broke out, the Dailish sided with their dwarven allies. This led to the High Elves destroying many of the Dailish colonies that were too far from the capital to protect. The loss led to a deep seeded hatred of elves in Dalish culture, that many still remember to this day. Dailish ships will attack elven ones on sight and consider the plunder reparations for their losses. The nation is now roughly half of their former glory after being initially decimated by the High Elves and they will always resent that. Dail has learned the lesson of being too aggressive with their colonialism however. They have adjusted their efforts more towards financial dominance and diplomatic trade approaches. Their ships are the most advanced in the world, their trade guilds are financially powerful, and the Dailish people are masters of trade and travel by sea. This has allowed them to achieve great prosperity without needing as many colonies as they had in the past. The Commonwealth of Dail as it stands now, is a nation of proud sailors and merchants who want to dominate trade worldwide.
