Architecture

Idelan Rebublic architecture can best be described as Greek/Roman in design. Pillars and intricately carved statues are melded into the designs and layouts tend to favor temple or secure complex styles. Towns and villages use heavy amounts of granite, sandstone, marble, and wood materials.

Clothing

Idelan fashion favors light free flowing clothing due to their island roots. Fabric is mostly cotton, silk, or leather. Clothing comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, but the more elaborate luxury clothing often has designs with waves or sea creatures on it. Citizens also like to wear wide brimmed hats to shade from the sun.

Food

Typical Idelan cuisine includes seafood, fruits, vegetables, grains, and livestock meats. The most popular dishes include a form of pita style flatbread with seafood or livestock meat folded into it and seasoned with dairy and herb sauces. Drinks are typically fruit or tea leaf based, and alcohol favors strong wines.

Culture

Music: Music from the Idelan Republic heavily favors flutes. As an island nation many of the populace also has a fascination with singing sea shanties and all of the most popular songs are shanty style. Melodies and songs are often related to the sea, or sailing, and the music has an ebb and flow to it that reflects their affinity for the sea.

Literature: Highly educated Idelan’s consider literature both an artform and a necessity. Books and scrolls are in abundance throughout the island and many of them cover a wide range of topics. Quite a bit of the text are related to philosophy, sailing, agriculture, and the study of crafts.

Entertainment/Theater: Gladiatorial games to the death, are by far the most popular form of entertainment in the Idelan Republic. With some of the more formidable gladiators reaching superstar status and despite many of the gladiators being prisoners, some are volunteers who join seeking fame and fortune. Outside of the arena, Idelan’s like strategic board games like chess, and card games for gambling. Prostitution is also an acceptable entertainment business and is lucrative due to the sheer number of sailors frequenting the island ports.

Technology and Magic

Technology is limited in the Idelan Republic due to the island not having access to a lot of the raw materials required for advanced machinery. Magic however is readily used and citizens are not surprised by it unless it is used for destructive or nefarious purposes.

History

On a large forested and mountainous island, the Idelan people through most of their ancient history believed their island was the only landmass in the world. Originally coastal fishermen and farmers their communities grew in relative peace and harmony with each other. Over time their civilization advanced, mostly in the arts, construction, and trades. As their populations grew, so did their governance in the form of a democratic republic. Wanting representation for even the most common of people, a system of elected officials represent their various constituencies in a great senate. So sure were they that they were alone on the world they dove deep into religion, philosophy, art, and music. To tame their more martial tendencies they established a robust gladiatorial system where fighters could earn great renown for their skills in arena fighting. That all changed with the arrival of the Commonwealth of Dail. Having previously been restricted to coastal sailing, when the Dailish arrived in larger seaworthy vessels it was a cultural revelation. Quick to establish friendship with the Dailish, the Idelan people exchanged research and technologies, establishing a deeply interwoven trade network between both nations. The Idelan Republic took to these seas like fish, and while one of the younger seaworthy nations, they quickly closed the skill gaps creating a very capable force of ships and sailors. Investing heavily in their Navy and martial forces, seeing great value in doing so to both protect their island and continue establishing trade with other nations. Very diplomatic in nature Idelan’s get along with almost all other nations with the exception of the evil races, and Cenovia, who they are in fierce competition with for fishing territories. The Idelan Republic as it stands now, is a strong bustling seafaring nation, who value philosophy and intelligence.
