Gully Dwarf

Gully dwarves are a small, primitive subrace of dwarf known for their lack of intelligence and their unkempt appearance. Their bodies are short and stout, similar to other dwarves, but their features are often disproportionate and crudely formed. They have matted hair and beards, unwashed skin, and ragged clothes, which are often just a collection of filthy rags held together with twine. They live in filthy conditions and smell foul. Gully dwarves have no notable regional variations; they are universally considered a degenerate race, and their appearance reflects their squalid lifestyle.

Naming Conventions

The naming conventions of gully dwarves are as simple and unrefined as they are. Names are often based on a single sound, a simple word, or even a basic emotion. They are not given at birth but are often assigned based on the first thing a gully dwarf says, or a sound they frequently make. Names are also sometimes given based on a physical trait or a simple-minded action. For example, a gully dwarf who likes to say "clack" might be named Clak, and one with a large nose might be called Snout. The most common names are Bupu, Mung, Sludge, and Toof.

History

Gully dwarves are believed to be the descendants of the original dwarven people, who were either cursed or devolved over time due to an unknown magical or biological phenomenon. The more civilized dwarves see them as a great embarrassment and a stain on their lineage. Despite their low intelligence, gully dwarves have survived in the margins of society for centuries, often living in the abandoned tunnels and ruins of more advanced civilizations. Their history is not one of great empires or powerful leaders, but a long, slow decline.

Culture and Religion

Gully dwarf culture is a twisted and simplistic version of more advanced societies. They have a primitive understanding of everything, and their society is a crude hierarchy where the strongest, or perhaps just the loudest, rule. They lack any real skills in construction or crafting, and their dwellings are often little more than crude tunnels or piles of garbage. They revere "great" things, which can be anything from a rusty can to a giant beast that they've seen. Their religion is a chaotic and incoherent mix of fear and simple reverence for whatever they find impressive. They are not brave warriors; they are scavengers and cowards, living in fear of the world around them.
