Territory: The Grand Duchy of Wilds Karameikos is a "deep, dark land," characterized by deeply forested flatlands, hills, and rugged mountains to the north. The vast majority of the territory is untamed wilderness, a constant struggle for the expanding civilization to push back. This wild landscape is home to numerous threats, including tribes of goblins and other humanoids, as well as more sinister entities like vampires and werewolves. The land is also rich with the remnants of ancient civilizations, with mysterious ruins hidden throughout, a testament to its long and tumultuous history. The nation's key population centers serve as islands of civilization in this hostile environment.

Specularum, is the bustling capital and largest city, with a population of approximately 50,000. Situated on a strategic seaport, it is a key trade hub ruled by King Stefan through his subordinates. Kelvin, the second-largest city with 20,000 inhabitants, is a heavily fortified way-stop for caravans located at a confluence of rivers. Its multi-walled design and military-efficient ruler, Baron Desmond Kelvin II, reflect its function as a bastion against the wilderness. The northern logging community of Threshold, with a population of 5,000, is a well-regarded frontier town and a known haven for adventurers. In stark contrast is Fort Doom, a dreary and repressed farming community of 10,000. Originally named Halag, it was conquered and is now ruled with an iron fist by Baron Ludwig von Hendriks, a testament to the tyrannical evil that lurks within the nation's borders . Beyond the human settlements lie territories that are part of Karameikos in name but maintain a high degree of autonomy. Highforge is the primary gnomish community, home to five gnome clans and one allied dwarven clan. The gnomes and dwarves of Highforge secured an agreement with Duke Stefan to remain self-governing while lending their military support to his cause. Similarly, the Callarii Lands are home to the Callarii elves, who reside in the central forests and provide crucial military aid to the Duke while retaining their independent governance.

Resources and Sustenance:

Karameikos is blessed with abundant natural resources. The land is covered with thick forests of hardwoods and softwoods, and broad patches of rich, arable soil, particularly along the Highreach River, make for excellent farming. Key industries include logging, agriculture, and fur trapping . The gnomish and dwarven communities in the north are a source of valuable craft goods and mineral wealth from their gold and silver mines . Trade is a vital component of the Karameikan economy. In ancient times, Traladarans traded furs for weapons and spirits . The Thyatian protectorate saw a trade boom that continued to flourish under Duke Stefan's rule. Stefan’s early administration was characterized by a massive investment in infrastructure, using trade tax revenues to build roads that connected the previously isolated villages into a unified trade network . This policy was designed to transform the land of "unfriendly villages" into a "strong trade nation" . Specularum (now Mirros) is a key seaport that facilitates international trade, while overland routes connect the nation to neighbors like Darokin . The Merchants' Guild plays a significant role in controlling logging, mining, and maritime trade, and is closely tied to powerful families like the Radu and Torenescu clans. The economic development of Karameikos, particularly the investment in its road infrastructure, serves as a powerful political strategy for nation-building, physically connecting the formerly disparate Traladaran villages. This act, while fostering prosperity, also centralized power and revenue, which created a palpable resentment among native Traladarans, who saw their resources being exploited for the benefit of the new ruling class.

Military and Defense:

King Stefan maintains a substantial standing army of approximately 10,800 troops and 640 sailors. The force is composed of a mix of native Traladarans, Thyatian immigrants, and Callarii elves, a deliberate strategy to build a cohesive national force. The army is organized into divisions, including Royal Cavalry and Karameikan Regulars, with a clear chain of command. Officers hold ranks such as General, Colonel, Captain, and Sergeant, with commanders typically being high-level fighters. The various knightly orders, including the Knight Bachelors and members of the greater and lesser orders, also contribute to the nation's defense. The Order of the Griffon is a distinguished military arm of the Church of Karameikos. It is a highly respected, heroic force, known for its dedication to fighting evil and protecting all people, regardless of their religion. The Order's missions often involve destroying temples of entropic Immortals, a mission that fosters cooperation between the two dominant churches . The Order has a strict internal hierarchy modeled after Thyatian military orders, with ranks including Master, Marshals, Knight Commanders, and Knight Brothers. The Grand Master of the order is Patriarch Oliver Jowett, the founder of the Church of Karameikos. A stark contrast to the national military is the private force of Baron Ludwig von Hendriks. The Baron maintains a garrison of 200 troops at Fort Doom, which he uses to brutally "stifle dissent and crush attackers". His forces are supported by human and goblinoid mercenaries, including orcs and bugbears. The Baron's reliance on monstrous mercenaries and his oppressive tactics stand as a direct affront to King Stefan's vision of a unified nation and highlight the dangerous instability lurking within the kingdom.

Relations:

The internal relations of Karameikos are complex, marked by both loyalty and bitter antagonism. King Stefan’s court is home to many loyal Thyatian nobles, including his cousin Alexius Korrigan, but it is also constantly challenged by the outright villainy of another cousin, Baron Ludwig von Hendriks. The Black Eagle Barony, under Ludwig’s rule, is a source of constant friction and a potential harbinger of civil war. The Baron, a cruel and unpopular man, is rumored to consort with foreign powers and aspires to the throne himself, making his domain a perpetual destabilizing force within the kingdom . The nation's foreign policy is a delicate balance of alliances and rivalries. The relationship with the Empire of Thyatis is particularly complex. While Stefan declared independence, the nations are bound by a decree of "eternal friendship and mutual defense". Karameikos remains a cultural offshoot of Thyatis, with intertwined trade relations. The nation also shares borders with the Five Shires, the homeland of the hin (halflings), and many hin immigrants have been drawn to Karameikos by its economic opportunities. The Republic of Darokin and the Principality of Glantri are identified as mercantile and magical rivals, respectively . Despite this rivalry, Karameikos has provided military aid to Darokin against Hulean forces, a strategic move to strengthen a potential ally and project power . The nation also engages in thriving maritime trade with the Minrothad Guilds, utilizing its capital's key seaport. Finally, King Stefan has secured crucial alliances with the demihuman races, including the Callarii elves and the gnomes and dwarves of Highforge, who fought alongside him to consolidate his rule . These alliances are unique in that the demihuman communities retain their autonomy, acknowledging the Duke's rule "in name only".

Reputation:

Karameikos holds a dual reputation in the Known World. It is seen as a burgeoning nation of opportunity, a "semi-wilderness borderland-type area" that serves as a well-known "haven for adventurers" . Its "unfinished feel" is a deliberate characteristic of the setting, providing a rich tapestry for stories and a place where new heroes and fortunes can be forged. This positive reputation is the direct result of King Stefan's focus on building a more just and prosperous kingdom. However, this reputation is also tempered by the persistent rumors of the nation's dark side. The oppressive rule of Baron Ludwig von Hendriks and the terror of Fort Doom are well-known, as are the pervasive reports of monsters, vampires, and werewolves that haunt the untamed wilderness . Karameikos has successfully navigated its transition from a protectorate to a legitimate kingdom, gaining a high diplomatic profile that is reflected in the numerous embassies established in its capital, Mirros . It is no longer viewed as a mere Thyatian province but as a rising power with its own influence, a position it has earned through its calculated independence and strategic foreign policies. The most significant and defining conflict for Karameikos remains internal. The Black Eagle Barony, a rogue state within the kingdom, is a constant and known threat to Stefan’s authority and the nation’s stability. Externally, the nation carefully manages its relationships with its neighbors. It maintains a complex and evolving dynamic with its former parent state, the Empire of Thyatis. It also navigates rivalries with the mercantile Republic of Darokin and the magical Principality of Glantri, all while solidifying its position as a new and influential player on the world stage.
