The Greenwardens

Guardians of the Willow Marches

The Greenwardens are the protectors, scouts, and watchful defenders of the Willow Marches. While the Iron Banner guards the realm's borders through fortresses and armies, the Greenwardens safeguard the countryside itself—patrolling lonely roads, watching over villages, and ensuring that the peaceful people of the Marches may sleep soundly beneath their roofs.

To most halflings, the Greenwardens are not soldiers.

They are neighbors.

History

The Greenwardens were founded generations ago when the growing prosperity of the Willow Marches attracted bandits, raiders, and monsters from the surrounding wilderness.

Rather than relying entirely upon foreign armies, local communities began organizing volunteer patrols to protect trade routes and settlements.

Over time these groups evolved into a respected and organized fellowship known as the Greenwardens.

Though independent from the Iron Banner, the two organizations maintain a close working relationship.

The Greenwardens serve as the eyes and ears of the Marches.

The Iron Banner serves as the shield.

Purpose

The Greenwardens exist to:

  • Protect villages and farms

  • Patrol roads and trade routes

  • Escort merchants and travelers

  • Hunt dangerous monsters

  • Investigate disturbances

  • Maintain watch over the countryside

  • Provide early warning of threats

Their mission is simple:

Protect the Marches before danger reaches the doorstep.

Organization

Unlike traditional military orders, the Greenwardens operate in small patrols.

A typical patrol consists of:

  • Scouts

  • Rangers

  • Hunters

  • Trackers

  • Local volunteers

Most members are halflings, though humans and other allies occasionally serve alongside them.

Leadership is decentralized, allowing patrols to respond quickly to local problems.

Recruitment

Membership is earned through service and trust.

Prospective Greenwardens are expected to demonstrate:

  • Good judgment

  • Courage

  • Reliability

  • Knowledge of the land

  • Commitment to protecting others

Many Greenwardens begin as farmers, hunters, caravan guards, or local guides before answering the call.

Methods

The Greenwardens rarely fight pitched battles.

They prefer:

  • Tracking

  • Observation

  • Ambushes

  • Scouting

  • Negotiation

  • Local knowledge

Many threats are dealt with long before ordinary citizens ever become aware of them.

A successful Greenwarden often receives little recognition.

That is precisely how they prefer it.

Equipment

Greenwardens favor practical equipment suited to long patrols.

Common gear includes:

  • Bows

  • Short swords

  • Spears

  • Cloaks

  • Traveling packs

  • Hunting traps

  • Signal horns

Their signature green cloaks help identify them throughout the Marches.

Relationship with Vhal'Tor

The Greenwardens maintain strong ties with the Iron Banner stationed at Ironfrost Gate.

Information gathered by Greenwarden scouts frequently helps Imperial forces respond to larger threats.

The Empire respects the Greenwardens for their professionalism and deep knowledge of the region.

Notable Duties

Roadwardens

Patrol major trade routes and escort merchant caravans.

Marsh Scouts

Monitor rivers, wetlands, and remote frontier regions.

Beast Hunters

Specialists tasked with tracking and eliminating dangerous monsters.

Trailkeepers

Reputation

Throughout the Willow Marches, the sight of a green cloak is reassuring.

Villagers know help has arrived.

Travelers know the road ahead is likely safe.

Children grow up hearing stories of Greenwardens rescuing lost travelers, outsmarting bandits, and protecting villages from monsters.

To outsiders, they are skilled rangers.

To the people of the Marches, they are something more.

They are the quiet guardians who ensure that peace endures.

Symbol

A silver willow leaf crossed over a wooden arrow upon a field of deep green.

The willow represents home.

The arrow represents vigilance.

Together they symbolize the Greenwardens' sacred duty:

To protect what grows.

"Ever Watchful, Ever Rooted."
