Origins

The Iron Banner was born from the ashes of the Iron Rebellions, a devastating civil war that nearly shattered Vhal'Tor seven centuries ago.

Before the rebellions, the kingdom relied heavily on noble levies. Each lord maintained their own soldiers, and loyalty often belonged to noble houses rather than the Crown itself.

When several powerful houses rose against the throne, the kingdom descended into chaos. Villages burned, trade collapsed, and entire provinces became battlefields.

The war finally ended when a coalition of loyalist forces, led by the legendary commander Aedric Ashford, united beneath a single standard and crushed the rebellion.

From that victory came a realization:

Vhal'Tor could never again rely solely upon feudal armies.

A permanent professional military was needed.

The Iron Banner was founded to answer that need.

The Founding of Highforge Keep

Following the war, the Crown commissioned the construction of Highforge Keep upon a granite ridge overlooking the heartlands.

The fortress was designed to serve as:

  • Military headquarters

  • Training center

  • Strategic command post

  • Symbol of unity

Unlike noble castles built to display wealth, Highforge was built for war.

Its walls became the physical embodiment of the kingdom's determination never to suffer another civil war.

To this day, every soldier of the Iron Banner dreams of serving within its walls.

The Age of Steel

Over the following centuries the Iron Banner evolved into one of the finest military organizations in Mythea.

Professional standards replaced noble favoritism.

Officers were promoted based on merit and leadership.

Training became standardized across the kingdom.

The Banner established:

  • Military academies

  • Officer corps

  • Engineering divisions

  • Logistics networks

  • Permanent garrisons

These reforms transformed the military into a force respected far beyond Vhal'Tor's borders.

The Border Wars

During the Age of Steel, Vhal'Tor faced numerous threats:

  • Bandit kingdoms

  • Border disputes

  • Monster incursions

  • Foreign raiders

The Iron Banner successfully defended the realm through discipline and organization rather than sheer numbers.

Many of the Banner's most celebrated heroes emerged during this period.

Stories of their victories are still taught to recruits today.

The Modern Iron Banner

Today the Iron Banner serves as the military shield of Vhal'Tor.

Its responsibilities include:

  • National defense

  • Border security

  • Internal stability

  • Military training

  • Protection of trade routes

  • Emergency response

Though feared by enemies, the Banner is viewed by most citizens as protectors rather than conquerors.

Their presence represents safety, order, and stability.

Leadership

Lord Marshal

The supreme commander of the Iron Banner.

Current holder:

Garrick Ashford

A veteran commander and member of House Ashford.

Known throughout Mythea for his honor, discipline, and strategic brilliance.

Many consider him one of the greatest military leaders of the age.

The War Council

The governing body beneath the Lord Marshal.

Its members include:

  • Generals

  • Fortress Commanders

  • Master Quartermasters

  • Engineering Officers

  • Intelligence Directors

Together they oversee military operations throughout the kingdom.

Highforge Keep

The heart of the Iron Banner.

Within its walls can be found:

  • The Marshal's Hall

  • The Hall of Banners

  • The Grand Training Yard

  • The Iron Forge

  • The Black Lion Stables

  • The Chapel of Duty

  • The Wall of the Fallen

Every stone of Highforge reflects the values of the Banner.

Philosophy

The Iron Banner teaches three virtues above all others:

Duty

The kingdom comes before the individual.

Discipline

Skill without discipline is dangerous.

Sacrifice

Freedom survives only because others stand watch.

These ideals are instilled in every recruit from the moment they swear their oath.

Organization

The Iron Banner is divided into several branches:

The Lion Guard

Elite protectors of the Crown and senior leadership.

Iron Legionnaires

The professional core of the army.

Banner Knights

Heavy cavalry drawn from both noble and common backgrounds.

Rangers of the Frontier

Scouts, trackers, and border wardens.

Corps of Engineers

Builders of roads, fortifications, and siege equipment.

The Quartermaster Corps

Responsible for logistics and supply.

Many military scholars consider the Banner's logistics network its greatest strength.

Relations with Other Powers

The Sovereign Chain

Loyal servants of the Crown.

The Stag Houses

Strong ties through military tradition and noble service.

The River Consortium

Close allies whose trade routes require protection.

The Order of the Gilded Rose

Mutual respect, though soldiers often underestimate the Order's influence.

The Midnight Exchange

Persistent enemies.

The Banner has spent centuries combating smuggling and organized crime.

Khazad-Dur

Trusted allies and valued suppliers of arms and armor.

The Hall of Heroes

Within Highforge Keep stands the Hall of Heroes, a chamber dedicated to the greatest figures in Banner history.

Their statues and banners commemorate:

  • Legendary commanders

  • Fallen champions

  • Heroes of the Iron Rebellions

  • Defenders of the realm

Every officer visits the hall before receiving command.

Current Era

The Iron Banner stands stronger than ever, yet new threats emerge.

  • Starfire relics are resurfacing.

  • Ancient ruins awaken across Mythea.

  • The Midnight Exchange grows increasingly bold.

  • Foreign powers expand their influence.

  • Political tensions rise among the great factions of Vhal'Tor.

Many believe another defining age approaches.

If so, the Iron Banner will once again stand at the center of it.

The Saying of the Iron Banner

"We stand so others may sleep in peace."

For seven centuries, this belief has guided the Iron Banner. More than an army, it is a brotherhood and sisterhood of soldiers sworn to defend Vhal'Tor against any threat, whether it comes from beyond its borders or from within.
