Status: Fortified Commercial Enclave
Location: Former Regional Mall Complex – Greenreach
Established: 2069 (Stabilized Enclave)
Population: ~350 Permanent Residents
Havendale is a permanent survivor enclave operating entirely within the reinforced shell of a pre-Fall regional mall complex in the Greenreach.
Unlike vertical tower enclaves or open-block settlements, Havendale consolidated around enclosed infrastructure — choosing containment over expansion.
It does not project outward.
It does not attempt reclamation campaigns.
It does not seek district influence.
Havendale exists to maintain one stable commercial core within an unstable overgrowth zone.
Thirty years after the Fall, it remains one of the most structurally secure civilian enclaves in Greenreach — not because it dominates territory, but because it controls interior space with discipline.
The regional mall was built with reinforced concrete framing, integrated fire suppression systems, controlled entry architecture, and multi-level retail corridors designed for heavy civilian load.
When the Fall destabilized the district in 2062, the mall’s enclosed footprint and structural redundancies allowed small survivor groups to shelter inside.
Early attempts at settlement failed due to poor gate control and uncontrolled population intake.
Between 2062 and 2069, the surviving group that would become Havendale implemented strict policies:
Seal secondary entrances permanently
Fortify exterior approach lanes
Limit residency to sustainable numbers
Convert retail space into modular housing
Establish controlled trade windows
By 2069, the mall had transitioned from improvised shelter to organized enclave.
The structure held.
The people stayed.
Havendale functions entirely within the original mall footprint.
A poured-concrete and scrap-plated perimeter wall now encloses the former parking lots and outer loading zones, tying directly into the building’s load-bearing columns. The wall rises roughly three stories and integrates rebar lattice, welded transit ribs, and reinforced mesh.
Former automatic entrances have been replaced with mechanical steel gates mounted on track systems.
The mall interior is organized around its original design:
Main Concourse (Central Spine)
Former retail storefronts converted into:
Residential units
Workshops
Supply storage rooms
Medical bays
Communal kitchens
Upper-level retail floors repurposed as long-term housing
Cinema spaces converted into dormitory-style quarters
The central glass atrium remains intact but layered internally with mesh and reinforced polymer sheeting.
The old fountain basin now serves as a hydroponic grow bed fed by rooftop rain capture and filtration systems.
Skylights provide natural light during the day. At night, consistent interior lighting maintains visibility across the concourse.
Parking structures adjacent to the mall are partially sealed and used for:
Vehicle staging
Salvage sorting
Bulk storage
Controlled logistics access
The entire enclave is interior-focused.
Everything important happens inside.
Havendale’s defensive philosophy is layered containment.
There are two official gates:
South Gate — Primary trade and traveler access
West Gate — Logistics and supply movement
Both require passage through reinforced entry corridors designed as choke points before reaching the main concourse.
Original mall fire shutters have been reinforced and repurposed to seal interior corridors section by section if breach occurs.
Upper balcony railings serve as overwatch positions.
Guards maintain:
Continuous interior surveillance
Exterior buffer-zone patrols
Controlled entry verification
The enclave does not pursue infected beyond its buffer zone unless necessary.
It secures its footprint.
It does not expand it.
Population: Approximately 350 permanent residents.
Havendale maintains a structured civilian workforce.
Roles include:
Perimeter guards
Structural engineers
Electrical and systems maintenance teams
Water filtration specialists
Hydroponic growers
Salvage mechanics
Medical staff
Quartermasters and trade coordinators
A small governing council operates from a converted pre-Fall management office suite overlooking the central atrium.
Contribution is mandatory.
Labor quotas are tracked.
Trade is regulated.
Residency is stable.
Havendale operates as a controlled commercial node within Greenreach.
It trades in:
Refurbished electronics
Processed salvage materials
Water filtration components
Hydroponic surplus
Mechanical repair services
Travelers are permitted limited stays in designated upper-floor guest quarters.
Weapons remain holstered inside the concourse.
Trade windows are structured and predictable.
The enclave does not tolerate internal violence.
Stability is its currency.
Havendale feels self-contained.
The concourse remains recognizable — wide walkways, balcony overlooks, suspended beams where banners once hung.
Faded store logos linger above reinforced doorframes.
Digital directory boards now display supply rosters and labor assignments.
Children move beneath skylights.
Workshops hum behind former display glass.
Outside, Greenreach is overgrown and quiet.
Inside, the lights stay on.
It is not ambitious.
It is not ideological.
It is established.
And it endures.
