The Scourched Foundry

@The Scorched Foundry

Overview:

The Scorched Foundry was once the industrial heart of New Hope City — a dense, sprawling complex of factories, refineries, and fabrication plants that powered the metropolis above and around it. When the Fall came, fire followed. Whether sparked by sabotage, cascading system failures, or human panic was never conclusively determined.

What is known is that the automated containment systems activated immediately.

They worked.

The inferno was sealed within the Foundry’s boundaries, isolated from the rest of the city — and it never went out.

For thirty years, the Scorched Foundry has burned.

---

Atmosphere:

Oppressive, unstable, and relentlessly loud. The air shimmers with heat distortion. Ash coats every surface, thick enough to dull color and soften edges. Embers fall constantly, drifting like blackened snow. Visibility changes minute by minute as smoke plumes shift and structures collapse.

The sound never stops — fire roaring through open chambers, machinery grinding itself apart, metal warping and snapping under stress. Even when nothing moves, the district feels active, as if the Foundry itself is still working toward a purpose no one remembers.

---

Reputation:

The Scorched Foundry is considered one of the most dangerous zones in the city — not because it is unknown, but because it is unforgiving. People understand it. They map it. They plan around it.

And still, it kills them.

Among salvagers, it is spoken of with a mix of respect and calculation. Among everyone else, it is a place you do not enter unless you have already decided the risk is worth it.

---

What it Was Before the Fall of the City:

Before the Fall, the Foundry was a tightly integrated industrial district responsible for heavy manufacturing, power distribution components, structural fabrication, and high-temperature processing. Massive automated systems managed production lines that ran continuously, feeding the city’s expansion and maintenance needs.

Redundancy and containment were core design principles. Nothing here was meant to fail outward.

---

How it Stands Now – 30 Years After the Fall:

Thirty years later, the Foundry exists in a permanent state of controlled catastrophe. The containment systems still function — not intelligently, but persistently. Fuel continues to be routed. Pressure is vented. Loads are shifted. Fires are fed and redirected rather than extinguished.

Entire factory complexes move on automated schedules, glowing red-hot, tearing themselves free from mountings, and collapsing into lower levels that are already burning. New pathways open. Old ones vanish. No map remains accurate for long.

Despite this, the district is not abandoned.

Specialized salvage crews make calculated incursions, targeting known stable windows and extracting rare materials: heat-resistant alloys, intact machine cores, hardened components that cannot be found elsewhere. These expeditions are brief, precise, and often fatal.

Most who enter do not return.

---

**Infected Presence:** 15 / 100

Infected presence is low relative to the danger of the environment itself. The heat, noise, and constant structural shifts make sustained infected movement difficult. Those that do enter are often destroyed by the environment long before becoming a threat.

The Foundry does not need infected to be lethal.

---

Life & Interaction:

No one lives in the Scorched Foundry. No permanent enclaves exist. Interaction with the district is transactional and time-limited. Crews prepare for weeks, enter for minutes, and measure success in what they manage to carry out — not in how long they survive inside.

Protective gear degrades rapidly. Communications fail unpredictably. Navigation changes without warning. Survival depends on discipline, experience, and accepting that retreat is sometimes the only victory.

What the Scorched Foundry Represents:

The Scorched Foundry stands as the purest expression of the old world’s priorities.

The fire was contained.

The systems endured.

The city survived.

Human cost was never part of the equation.

Thirty years later, the Foundry still works — not for people, but because it was never designed to stop.

And it is still burning.
