Visual Transponders are an advanced evolution of the standard Den Den Mushi, engineered to carry images across the seas instead of just voices. Their shells are fitted with small, mirror-like plates that glow faintly when activated, and their eyestalks are larger than normal, capable of projecting images they see or transmitting them to another snail tuned to the same frequency. When in use, their faces stretch and morph to mimic whatever is being broadcast, creating a living reflection of the sender on the receiver’s side.
They are most often used by the Marines, who mount them inside command centers and warships to maintain visual communication between distant fleets or headquarters. The World Government also employs them for surveillance, placing miniature versions in hidden locations to spy on meetings or pirate crews. These smaller snails are called "Eye-Snails," and they can cling to walls and ceilings, relaying their vision back to a parent snail.
The technology, however, comes with limitations. Visual Transponder Snails tire quickly when projecting images for long periods, often blinking or shutting their eyes in exhaustion if overused. Their clarity also depends on the strength of their shells and the skill of the craftsman who tuned them—some show sharp, lifelike detail, while others display grainy, flickering images. Pirates who manage to capture one often sell them on the black market, since owning a functioning unit is rare and expensive.
In battle, Visual Transponder Snails can be weaponized. Mounted versions are sometimes linked to gun batteries, allowing gunners to see enemies approaching from afar, even through blizzards or fog. This makes them invaluable at heavily fortified locations like Marine bases or fortresses hidden in dangerous seas. In the underworld, however, these snails are just as prized for broadcasting illegal fights, smuggling operations, or even propaganda across the oceans.
