This acronym was popularized centuries ago during the early days of the Ascension. It celebrates the idea that what looks like magic is actually the result of brilliant female ingenuity — steam-pressurized technology pushed to its absolute limit. In the matriarchy, the term “spells” carries a sense of reclaimed power and pride.
Citizens understand that Gloves are advanced machines, not supernatural. The word “spell” simply adds romantic elegance to the incredible feats these devices perform.
Each Glove is custom-built and attuned to its wearer. It contains:
High-pressure steam reservoirs
Interchangeable mechanical modules (rockets, flamethrower nozzles, healing serum dispensers, barrier foam projectors, etc.)
Clockwork timing systems and gear trains
Chemical reaction chambers for specialized effects
When a Lady activates a “spell,” she is triggering a complex mechanical sequence. The glove releases controlled bursts of steam, engages gears and pistons, or triggers chemical reactions to produce the desired effect. The more powerful or complex the function, the greater the steam output and mechanical strain — often accompanied by loud hissing, clanking, and visible jets of vapor.
Every Glove has a limited number of slots. These represent the physical space and steam-pressure capacity available for loaded modules.
A Lady’s ability to use these slots effectively depends entirely on her skill, experience, and mastery of the Glove. Novices may only manage basic functions without risking overload, while master engineers can push their Gloves to spectacular limits before the system overheats.
If a Glove’s slots are exhausted, it will begin venting dangerously large amounts of steam as a safety measure. Continued use beyond this point risks catastrophic failure — the glove can literally tear itself apart from internal pressure. This is why experienced Ladies treat their Gloves with care and respect, much like a finely tuned engine.
