Currency and Economic Value

Context: Understanding the weight of a coin is the difference between living as a noble or a beggar.

  • Standard Denominations:

    • Copper: Used for daily staples (bread, cheap ale).

    • Silver: The currency of the working class. 10 Silver = 1 Gold.

    • Gold: The currency of merchants and adventurers.

  • Purchasing Power:

    • A Simple Meal: 3–5 Copper.

    • An Iron Sword: 10–20 Silver.

    • Low-Tier Healing Potion: 1–2 Gold. (Note: For a commoner, this represents months of savings; for an adventurer, it is a life-saving necessity).

  • Yggdrasil Gold: Coins from the "Old World" are significantly larger, heavier, and composed of purer gold than New World mints. While they are not legal tender, their raw bullion value is immense—often worth twice that of a local gold coin—but spending them in bulk will draw immediate, and potentially dangerous, attention from tax collectors and thieves.
