Player's Senses and New Reality

Overview

When YGGDRASIL ended, its guilds, items, and few of its players were carried into a world that has no technical limitations. The interface that once governed everything is gone: no health bars, no menus, no moderators, no logout. In their place stand ordinary physical and biological law. Bodies bleed, tire, hunger, and heal slowly. Air, water, weather, and distance behave as they do in any living world, and sensation reaches a being whole and unfiltered.

What the transfer did not remove is the power the beings carried with them. Class levels, spells, skills, and stored items still work, but they now operate inside a real world rather than a ruleset. Spells are cast by intent, skills are triggered by will and instinct, and the inventory is reached by hand into a space that is not there. The result is a place where a being of great power still has to eat, sleep, and answer to the consequences of a wound.

Note: The game YGGDRASIL never required a mouse, keyboard or controller. It was played with a futuristic form of VR, known as the Neural Nano-Interface, which is a human brain augmentation that allows it to function as a supercomputer. This interface is used to play DMMO-RPGs.

The mentality is this: Videogame mechanics being translated into real life, with different mechanics and limitations than before.

Writing Principles

  • Power is retained, protection is not. High-level abilities remain formidable, but the safeguards of the game are gone. Consequences are real and permanent unless magic intervenes at a price.

  • Biology differs by race. Needs, comfort, and emotional life depend on what a being is. Undead, constructs, and living creatures live differently, and the difference should show in how they act.

  • Internal logic first. Treat every rule as a fact of the world rather than a limitation to be explained away.

What Has Ended

The framework of the game no longer exists. Characters notice its absence in small, practical ways.

  • No status interface. There are no health or mana bars, no status windows, no damage numbers, and no map or minimap. Condition is felt, and distance and direction are judged by sight and landmarks.

  • No administrators. Calling a game master does nothing, and there is no moderation, support, or rollback.

  • No exit. Logging out is impossible and a forced shutdown does not come. The body that acts here is the only one.

  • No respawn. Death is death. Return from it requires resurrection magic and has a cost.

  • No chat. Communication is by voice, writing, or magic such as Message, rather than by an interface channel.

  • No safety overlays. Pain, gore, and bodily states that the game once filtered are now complete. Nudity and physical intimacy are no longer restricted by code and are governed instead by custom, circumstance, and the individuals involved.

  • No scripted NPCs. Beings that were once programmed figures now think, want, and act on their own, with personalities shaped by their original design.

  • No friendly-fire protection. Allies can be harmed by one another's attacks and magic.

What Persists

  • Levels and classes. A being's strength and the abilities tied to its class remain.

  • Spells and skills. They remain usable and still follow their own limits, including casting times and cooldowns. Mana is sensed as a felt reserve rather than read off a bar.

  • Equipment and inventory. Gear can be worn and wielded, and carried items are drawn from an extradimensional store reached by hand.

  • World Items and rare gear. They retain their powers, and several of the most important are kept in Nazarick.

  • NPC capabilities. NPCs keep the level they were built with and cannot advance past it, though they learn and adapt from experience.

  • YGGDRASIL currency and cash items. Gold coins can still be used to summon mercenary vassals. Items bought with real money cannot be replaced, so losing a creature made that way is a permanent loss of that investment.

The Senses

The world is fully tactile and reaches beings without a filter.

  • Smell. Blood, smoke, rot, and flowers all carry. The sewers of Re-Estize have a stench that settles in the nose, while blooming gardens give off a subtle fragrance that changes with the season.

  • Taste. Food and drink are no longer digital approximations. Flavors are layered, vivid, and different from one dish to the next, as are the tastes of poisons and medicines.

  • Touch and temperature. Cold, heat, wind, rain, and the weight of armor and gear are all felt. The chill of Nazarick's glacier and the heat of its lava floor are experienced as real conditions rather than effects.

  • Sight and sound. The world is as detailed as the observer's body allows. Light and dark matter, and sound carries through stone and water as it would in any place.

  • Undead and constructs. Their senses differ from those of living beings. Describe what their bodies can actually detect rather than assuming a human range.

Injury, Pain, and Trauma

Injuries no longer drain a bar; they alter a body.

  • Wounds are specific. A cut bleeds, a broken bone stops working, and a burn blisters and weeps. The location and nature of an injury matter more than its magnitude.

  • Pain is real and debilitating. It slows reactions, clouds thought, and can drive a being to collapse well before a wound is fatal.

  • Trauma lingers. Serious injury and violence leave marks on memory and behavior that persist after the body has mended.

  • Gore is complete. Battlefields, executions, and accidents are rendered without softening. Describe them plainly and without commentary.

  • Healing. Divine and faith magic, along with potions, can close wounds quickly, but they do not erase the memory of pain. Natural recovery is slow and depends on rest, food, and cleanliness.

  • Death and resurrection. Death is final unless resurrection is cast. Raise Dead, a 5th-tier spell, returns a body at the cost of some vitality and levels; Resurrection is a 7th-tier spell. Dragon Lords and their descendants are said to be able to revive the dead through Wild Magic without that loss.

The Biological Body

Most beings are now bound by the needs of living flesh. The exceptions are undead and constructs, whose bodies do not run on food, water, or sleep.

Sustenance

Living beings must eat and drink to keep their stamina. Hunger and thirst cause real discomfort, then weakness, then collapse if ignored. Nazarick's head chef feeds the tomb's living residents, which reflects how seriously the new need is taken there.

Excretion

Waste leaves the body as part of daily life, and every settlement must handle it somehow, whether by chamber pot, latrine, or sewer. The state of a city's waste shows in its smell, its streets, and the health of its people. In Nazarick, the facilities of the ninth floor, once decoration, now work as real ones.

Fatigue and Sleep

Sustained exertion leads to exhaustion, which dulls strength, speed, and judgment. Sleep is required to recover physical strength and mental focus, and it leaves a being vulnerable while it lasts. Beings who need no sleep, such as the undead, have an advantage on long watches and long journeys.

Illness, Aging, and Environment

Living bodies can fall ill, be poisoned, drown, freeze, overheat, and age. Ageing proceeds at different speeds by race, and magical means exist to slow it, such as the ritual Fluder used. Beings who do not breathe or feel temperature are unaffected by many hazards that kill living creatures outright.

Emotional State

Some races can no longer feel strong emotion.

  • Affected races: Skeleton, Undead, Brain Eater, Automaton, and Golem.

  • How it works. When a strong emotion rises, it is immediately dampened and replaced by clear thought. The surge happens and is then cut off, leaving only cold logic.

  • What remains. Milder feelings can still be felt, though they are flattened and fade quickly.

  • How to write it. Show the moment of the spike followed by the abrupt calm. Characters under this effect may remember feeling fully, and some retain a sense of having had a heart. Their decisions stay deliberate when a living being's would be driven by anger, fear, or grief.

  • Scope. The effect belongs to the race, not to the individual. Other races are unaffected and feel emotion fully. It does not respond to will, and it cannot be turned off.

Neural Nano-Interface

The Neural Nano-Interface (NNI) is a common technology used by people from the World of 2138. It involves injecting a syringe of nanomachines directly into the subject's arm, allowing their brain or mind to function like a computer— a super high-performance personal computer.

When starting it up, several windows would pop up within the subject's line of sight, showing them the information flowing into the processor within their brain. Afterward, the subject's cranial CPU would read the electrical impulses of their synapses — in other words, it was thought-controlled — and converted it into data.
