Death is not the end

In the chaotic world of Thalassara, death is not always the end. The veil separating the living from the dead is thin, a fragile membrane stretched across a world steeped in ancient magic. As such, the Undead are a tangible, and often tragic, presence. These beings have transcended death, existing in a state of animated or cursed existence. Their forms are varied, from shambling zombies and skeletal warriors to ethereal phantoms and poltergeists, but they all share a common thread: they are beings of unfinished business.

Many of the undead are a direct result of the world's raw, untamed magic. Some are the victims of powerful curses, their souls unable to find rest. Others are reanimated through vile necromancy, their bodies and minds twisted into puppets of dark sorcerers. They often retain echoes of their former lives, memories and skills lingering like a bad dream, but they are driven by new, terrifying hungers—a gnawing desire for the life they've lost, or an insatiable thirst for revenge against those who wronged them. They are both formidable and tragic figures, walking embodiments of a past that refuses to stay buried.

However, not all undead are victims of a curse or dark magic. Some are the architects of their own fate. A few have managed to make a pact with a deity of life and death, such as Baron Samedi. These individuals, known as the Chosen of the Baron, have willingly given up their mortal coil in exchange for power and influence. They are not mindless husks but cunning, immortal beings who serve as the god's hands in the mortal world, ferrying souls and upholding the cosmic balance of life and death.

The presence of the undead adds another layer of complexity to the life of a pirate in Thalassara. A treasure may be guarded by the ghost of a long-dead captain, a lost island may be home to a legion of skeletal warriors, and an old enemy might return from the grave seeking vengeance. For the living, the undead are a constant reminder that in Thalassara, even the grave offers no true escape from destiny.
