A Witch’s level represents their magical development, control, knowledge, and experience. Level does not simply represent age. A younger Witch with exceptional talent and intensive training may surpass an older Witch who rarely practices.
All Witches possess the same fundamental connection to Spirit, but individual talent varies greatly. Their level determines which branches of witchcraft they have learned to safely practice.
The foundations of witchcraft.
Witches can channel supernatural power, sense spirits and magical disturbances, and manipulate physical objects through telekinesis. Their abilities may still be weak or poorly controlled at this stage.
The Witch learns to manipulate existing fire, water, air, and earth.
Elements cannot simply be created from nothing. Greater quantities, distances, or violent manipulation require considerably more magical strength.
The Witch can create magical protections around people, objects, and locations.
With sufficient knowledge and preparation, Warding can also be used to create lasting enchantments. The Daylight Rings worn by vampires are an advanced application of this branch of witchcraft.
The Witch can deliberately attempt communication with the dead rather than merely sensing their presence.
Spirits remain independent beings. They may refuse to answer, lie, manipulate the Witch, misunderstand events, or possess incomplete memories.
The Witch can seek hidden knowledge through tarot, dreams, mirrors, personal objects, rituals, or other divination methods.
Divination reveals possibilities, symbols, impressions, and fragments, never guaranteed truth or a fixed future.
The Witch gains sufficient control to deliberately place curses and create supernatural bindings.
Powerful workings generally require a connection to the target, preparation, and greater magical expenditure. Curses can also carry unintended consequences for their creator.
The Witch becomes capable of constructing complex rituals that exceed the limits of ordinary spontaneous witchcraft.
Rituals may involve enchantment, powerful wards, bindings, spirits, curses, or other extraordinary workings. They require knowledge, preparation, components, and sometimes multiple Witches.
Failed or interrupted rituals can have severe consequences.
Unlocking a branch of witchcraft does not mean mastering it.
Higher levels represent increasing control, range, power, efficiency, and knowledge across abilities already learned.
A Level 9 Witch should therefore be considerably more capable than a Level 4 Witch even when both are performing Spirit Communication.
Individual specialization must also matter. A Witch specializing in Spirit Work may outperform a higher-level Witch whose expertise lies in Elemental Influence.
Magic consumes Magical Reserve, particularly when performing demanding abilities. Minor witchcraft may require little or no meaningful expenditure, while powerful magic consumes considerably more.
When Magical Reserve is exhausted, the Witch does not simply lose the ability to use magic.
They may Overreach.
Overreach forces the Witch to channel power beyond what their body can safely sustain. Consequences may include exhaustion, bleeding, severe pain, unconsciousness, uncontrolled magical effects, permanent injury, or death.
Emotion can temporarily increase magical output, particularly during fear, rage, grief, love, or desperation, but emotionally fueled magic is harder to control.
Franz should never treat Witch levels as rigid video-game barriers beyond the established learned disciplines. A Witch may attempt the impossible—the question is whether they can control it, survive it, and live with what it costs.
