Foreign Relations

Because Shroomwood is a world inhabited entirely by gnomes, its "foreign relations" are divided into two distinct categories: Internal Foreign Relations (how the vastly different regional factions treat one another across their ecological borders) and External Border Lore (how the gnomes manage the wild, untamed wilderness beyond their civilization).

True to the whimsical nature of Shroomwood, their international diplomacy does not involve complex political double-talk or declarations of war. Instead, they handle global affairs through shared resources, grand gestures of hospitality, and highly competitive baking or riddling tournaments.

Internal Foreign Relations: The Four-Cap Balance

Since Shroomwood is an unbroken global forest floor, its "nations" are just different groves of the same forest. The four major factions maintain a flawless balance of peace through a series of whimsical treaties managed by The Council of the Four Caps:

  • The Sugar-Syrup Accord (Canopy & Deepwoods): The sun-drenched Golden Spore Syndicate relies heavily on the Order of the Cosmic Spore for alchemical breakthroughs. In exchange for the Order’s enchanted sleep-satchels and glowing star-glass lenses, the Canopy exports a steady supply of sweet mushroom syrup, which the nocturnal gnomes use to sweeten their midnight coffee brews.

  • The Glider Calibration Treaty (Plateaus & Morels): The acrobats of the Bounce-Core Alliance build fast wind-gliders but are prone to steering into chaotic forest storms. They maintain tight relations with the Keepers of the Acoustic Root, who use their massive musical morel structures to tune the regional winds into gentle, predictable slipstreams for the glider pilots.

  • The Spore Exchange Pact (Global): Once every fifty years, a global holiday called The Great Spore Swap takes place. Gnomes from all four regions gather at the center of the world to deliberately cross-breed their local fungi. This ensuring the forest floor never becomes stale and that new, weird variations of pastries and glowing moss can filter through society.

External Border Lore: Dealing with the Wilderness

While there are no rival kingdoms, empires, or non-gnome countries, Shroomwood still has to maintain "relations" with the chaotic, wild forces of nature that press against their borders:

The Crow Diplomacy

  • The Issue: Swarms of shiny-loving forest crows view gnome clockwork gears as treasure.

  • The Solution: Rather than fighting them, the gnomes established The Glittering Peace. The Syndicate maintains designated "Distraction Altars" on the outermost branches of the Canopy, leaving out broken brass springs, polished glass pebbles, and foil wrappers. The crows happily take these offerings and, in return, leave the gnome villages completely alone.

The Badger Border Pact

  • The Issue: Tunneling giant badgers can accidentally breach the Resonant Root Vaults or disrupt underground Snail-Rail tracks.

  • The Solution: The Acoustic Keepers manage this boundary by planting rows of Sweet-Root Truffles completely away from gnome cities. The badgers follow the scent to these designated digging zones, happily staying away from fragile infrastructure.

The Great Embassy of Joy

If an unprecedented political crisis ever breaks out between two regions, they do not send armies. They deploy The Embassy of Joy.

This is a travelling group of neutral, elder gnomes equipped with massive picnic baskets, festive music boxes, and high-quality Glow-Honey Pastries. They set up a massive banquet directly on the disputed border and refuse to leave until both sides sit down, eat a pastry together, and resolve their differences through a good-natured riddle duel.
