Technology

TECHNOLOGY

Technology defines civilization throughout SINK.

Advanced technology is common, but access, quality, and sophistication vary between civilizations, factions, worlds, and individuals. A frontier colony may rely on equipment generations behind a major city, while ancient or alien technology may exceed anything currently understood.

Technology is not automatically equivalent to magic. Phenomena that appear supernatural are generally attributed to advanced science, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, Void interaction, or unknown precursor mechanisms unless established lore states otherwise.

MAJOR TECHNOLOGIES

Common advanced technologies include:

• Cybernetics and prosthetics
• Biotechnology and genetic engineering
• Artificial intelligence
• Nanotechnology
• Energy weapons
• Energy shielding
• Autonomous drones and machines
• Advanced medicine
• Orbital and interstellar infrastructure
• Faster-than-light transportation
• Advanced communications
• Biomechanical systems
• Warframes and related technologies

These technologies are established parts of the setting rather than rare technological miracles.

UNEQUAL DEVELOPMENT

Technological advancement is not uniform.

A civilization may possess extraordinary capabilities in one field while lacking development in another.

A wealthy core world may have automated infrastructure, advanced medicine, and ubiquitous AI while a remote settlement relies on repaired machinery and limited communications.

Technology can also be restricted by cost, law, geography, scarcity, political control, technical knowledge, or deliberate secrecy.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

LOST AND RECOVERED TECHNOLOGY

SINK contains technologies whose origins are poorly understood.

Precursor artifacts, alien engineering, ancient installations, Void relics, recovered weapons, abandoned machines, and forgotten scientific discoveries can introduce capabilities far beyond the technological level of their current users.

Recovered technology does not automatically come with an understanding of how it works.

Reverse engineering may take years or generations.

Some technologies may remain permanently mysterious.

TECHNOLOGY AND THE VOID

The Void can interact with conventional technology.

Void exposure may alter materials, disrupt systems, produce anomalous behavior, or enable capabilities that conventional science cannot fully explain.

Void technology should not be treated as ordinary engineering.

Its behavior may depend upon circumstances, location, compatibility, or properties that remain unknown.

TECHNOLOGY IN SINK

Technology is part of everyday life.

People repair machines, replace cybernetics, use medical equipment, communicate through networks, travel between settlements, operate vehicles, and interact with artificial intelligence without considering these things extraordinary.

At the same time, sufficiently advanced technology can reshape individuals, societies, warfare, economies, and entire civilizations.

The existence of advanced technology does not mean every individual has equal access to it.

Technology remains a source of power, opportunity, inequality, and conflict throughout SINK.
