Norrved

Norrved lies far to the north, where dense forests and severe winters shape almost every part of daily life. Hunting, trapping and forestry sustain the village, while preparations for winter begin long before the first snow. When the southern road becomes impassable, Norrved may remain isolated for weeks, leaving its people dependent on one another and whatever has been stored before winter.

Winter has its own customs. No traveler caught in a snowstorm is refused shelter, firewood taken from a wilderness shelter should always be replaced, and villagers avoid calling someone's name into the forest during heavy snowfall. Before the first major snow of the year, many households leave food outside overnight. Some say it is for hungry animals. Others give older explanations.

One rule is taken particularly seriously during winter: if you find footprints outside your home after fresh snowfall, make certain they lead both toward and away from the house.

Local Mystery — The Winter Visitor

After particularly heavy snowfalls, people in Norrved occasionally discover a trail of footprints leading into the village from the northern forest.

They resemble those of an ordinary person walking barefoot through the snow.

The tracks pass between houses, sometimes stopping outside doors or beneath windows. Dogs become restless when they cross them, but no one has ever reported seeing who made them.

Eventually, the footprints reach one particular house.

There they stop.

There are no tracks leading away, and the snow around the building remains completely untouched.

By morning, whoever lives inside usually insists that nothing happened during the night.

But sometimes an extra place has been set at the table.
